Hey there,

A friend needs a budget laptop for work (documents and browsing the net) so nothing hectic. I'm clueless with the current laptop prices and she prefers new. Any decent deals out there?
Decent? - Link

Thanks in advance

Gosh you might get a warranty but that'll be a painful machine to use

Brand new machines are terrible value, especially entry level

Agreed, will try to convince looking into 2nd hand options. I've seen some i5s sell in that bracket. Any suggestions?

Anything new around that budget will be really badly made and really badly specced. You might say 'well, she doesn't do anything hectic so I don't see why it should be well specced?' but trust me, cheap laptops don't last. Their performance degradation is huge and failure rate is high after a given period.

A second hand option would be far better.

True, thanks for that. Will keep an eye open for a decent laptop, hopefully within budget.

If you're worried about battery performance of a second hand laptop, don't be, because the battery you get in a R4k laptop won't give you much unplugged time anyway.
If second hand is really not an option, at the very least whatever laptop you buy, swap out the HDD for a SSD.

Thanks for the heads up on battery life. Yeah an SSD would really make the strain on the budget parts less noticeable.

A second hand iPad would almost be better than a cheap laptop.

Add Office 365 mobile edition and you have a really good browser, email and casual work tablet.
You get 1tb of cloud storage with Office 365 so backing up important info isn't a problem. It's just R900/year.

Any laptop with a 7 gen i5 and 4 to 8GB of RAM will be cheap enough and more than sufficient. There are so may options. Check Acer's offerings for good deals.

Check takealot.

Cheers :)

A couple people selling laptops for R4000 that knock the socks off anything you can get retail.

I agree. Was just a thought if you’re buying new and want a full warranty.
