Hi guys.

So im looking to buy a Kia Rio 2012 -2013 model. +-100k on the clock for price of R110 000 give or take R5000

Are these cars a good buy?

I know nothing, like John Snow when it comes to KIA cars.

i have not had a Rio but had the smaller Picanto for about 4 months...
What amazes me about these cars is the spacious interiors... and they seem to be good quality materials used.
The fuel consumption figures are bull crap... the small engines mean you have to drive them hard unless you on the freeway.
I know two people who had catastrophic mechanical failures in Rios. The one his car would not stop accelerating. He finally switched it off and Kia told him gearbox needs a software update.. oops.
The other one the Steering wheel seized up and the vehicle crashed and his whole family was in the car. I know the first guy professionally and the second one personally.
His insurance company is busy with that issue and no comment so far.
Both were 2015 models.

I have a 2014 Kia Rio and what a brilliant car. The equipment included in the price and trim level I think is one of the best on the market when I bought mine. Power delivery is great at 79KW and the 6-speed box is well matched. Sound system in the car is really good and works well with the Bluetooth built-in for the phone and steering controls. Trip computer stays on economy read out all the time. I did a trip to Cape town end of December and achieved 5.8l/100km. The car does seem to be more thirsty in town but if you drive very nicely it does well. Seats are really comfy too and headroom in back is great. For the money I think they are well worth it.

Thank you very much for the feedback Bencrisp

I drive a 2007 Kia Rio 1.4 with around 111 000km. Got it as a student with around 60 000km on the clock and it's been a champ. The only issue I ever experienced was a whiny power steering belt after enough use which was fixed by a replacement and the front passenger automatic window's button stopped working to make it go down, however, I can still lower and raise it from the driver's side.

The new models have a sexy body and the power is more than sufficient for both town and highway driving. According to a *cough* friend *cough* it can do 180km+ if there is some medical emergency like lead in your shoe

I also have a 2014 Kia Rio with just 40k km on the clock and my experience has been similar to Bencrisp.

I also love the extras mine came with - Bluetooth, sunroof etc.

There is however one issue that is, or so I've heard, common to Kias. I have a really weird clutch issue. My car is only used for inner city running around. When I do decide to take it for a "long distance" drive, I'm talking Durban to Pinetown, the issue pops up.

The issue:
The clutch catch point drops and the clutch can only be engaged right at the end of pedal travel. It requires some effort to change gear & it's like I'm expected to be able to have the clutch further in (which is not possible).

However, when the car is switched off for a few minutes and back on, the issue disappears for a while. I've sent the car in for service and described this issue to Kia but they haven't managed to resolve it as they probably couldn't replicate the conditions.

I have a video of this if you would like to see what I'm talking about.
