Keyboard Nut Thread

I've got a soft spot for Corsair, had some special treatment from them many years ago and for that I am more than willing to pay the slight premium.

It seems to be between the K95 and K70 then. Just to confirm, the MX Browns will not be heard over a mic?

Thanks for your input.

Nope, they won't make clicky noises.

So according to Banggood, my Royal Kludge has been in SA since the 8th of August and they can't give me any more info.

I need to call the "local Post office" and find out about the package, they can't even check if its still at customs.

Did you take the Tax Free option?

Otherwise you're going to have to call customs and try and sort it out with them

When I was building my system 2 weekends ago I just grabbed any old keyboard for those first steps into the BIOS and installing the OS. which was my old Redragon Yama with Otemu Purple switches, haven't touched the keyboard since I replaced it short term with the opticals on the Gamdias P3 around 2 years ago. And damn, I love those funny Chinese switches. In retrospect I actually like typing on this keyboard more than my tactile Ducky or the linear MK850 (or the tactile P3). Whilst I am crazy happy with my G815 in retrospect I could have stopped this keyboard journey just as it began with the Yama, it's that good.
Though lacking in quality I suppose somewhat as the LED on the W is already dead.
Wish there was more stuff out there using those Otemu Purples.

Any recommendations for keyboards lots of left side macro buttons? Looking for something for productivity coz doing long sessions of Ctrl+ and Fn keystrokes for days is too fatiguing and disruptive for my old hands. Had a good flow going with an old Steelseries Apex Gaming (same as 350) till it got legs, now I'm looking for a replacement, only now I can include mech switches as I'm mostly working from home now. Are there any new or custom options available in 2020, or should I just continue looking for an old K95 or Apex 350?

Originally it was express shipping, then Banggood changed it to Air Mail Registered :(

I'm just pissed off because Banggood charged me R300 shipping and this is the kinda shit I'm dealing with.

These keycaps are like 150 usd or something for the full set. PMK i think.

Nope. There is none. You can buy Glorious brand from Evetech if you want:

Rebeltech used to sell Tai-Hao caps, but they are no longer with us unfortunately.

KBD Fans is a good option. Also from China but they've always been reliable to me.

Thanks for the reply.

Specifically looking at stylized keycaps such as the Totoro and Spirited away keycaps that I saw on reddit, which the user got from Aliexpress.

Does KBD fans give you upfront cost of shipping and customs etc.? I'm pretty clueless with importing I have only bought from Amazon US twice because I know it's a once off payment and you will definitely get your order.

I'm happy with my keycaps, using a Coolermaster Masterkeys S (Do not know how I used to live with all those extra keys on conventional keyboards) with MX Browns and like the reasonably understated look. The backlighting is just set to a dim amber color, similar to BMW interior lighting. I like to think that it's easier on the eyes at night.

But I'm interested in getting a cheap mechanical for my girlfriend and using that as an excuse for getting some cool keycaps in. Also I like Studio Ghibli

So KBD fans charge you a $15 shipping fee. Then once it gets in you pay customs and a R150 "handling" fee from FedEx.

On a $90 order, my friend paid R391 customs including the R150 fee of FedEx.

So thats $15 and R391 on top of that to get your order to you.

If you decide to do a KBDFans order, make a post about it and get a few people in to buy together and split shipping proportionately.

I bought about 9k worth of stuff from KBDFans once, and my shipping all in all was around R380, and in two weeks.
Another time I bought keycaps and a few test switches and my shipping worked out to about the same. Also arrived within 2 weeks.

I agree though, shipping together is a good idea and saves everyone a few rands.

Thanks for the feedback guys I'll keep it in mind.

On another note, not completely keyboard, does anyone here use a rotary volume control knob? I saw a mechanical button panel on reddit that also had a rotary encoder on it and thought it would be cool for volume control

I'd love it! I'm still waiting on my first PCB prints to arrive but my next one will definitely have a rotary encoder.

Out of curiosity, is anyone looking at purchasing from Drop or Amazon in the coming weeks, that wouldn't mind splitting a purchase?

I'm still applying for that importers license, but the addiction is calling. :p

Sorry I got to this late, Im afraid I cant join you, got some other plans atm. Also Im pretty sure Amazon ships a 15ml tube of krytox 205 for 21$, idk about tribysos/krytox oils, but it seems like a pretty good deal

That 205 is probably G2, which you wouldn't want to use for switches.

No worries 👍🏻 I ended up ordering already 😬

What @Mike says - the krytox from Amazon is not the correct grade for switches.

I'm 100% sure you can use Grade 2 on switches. The grading of the lube only specifies the thickness (read viscosity) of the lube/grease.

You're just going to put less grade 2 on the switches.

Ahok, cool. Thats good to know for the future, will have to buy the proper stuff then

Just did a quick search and found this seems like grade2 is too thick, may work ok for linears, wouldnt use them on tactiles tho.

😂 you're gonna have a bad time if you try to lube switches with 205g2. It's not impossible, but it's gonna be really difficult to get a decent results, let alone a consistent one.
