So I thought it would be pretty cool to have a place to just come to .... and Vent.

IT can be pretty toxic at the best of times, I am in IT support and my word .... the stuff that I have to deal with on a daily basis is astonishing ......

So why not have a thread to moan about it that is not my colleagues or my boss.....

So I invite all you people that have to deal with this nonsense on a day to day basis to come here ... and vent it out.

I look forward to reading some of your quality content.

EDIT:

This can be about anything IT really. Ill admit I couldnt do half the peoples jobs I support but on a bad day it just FEELS that I am having to do their jobs. This isnt to disrespect anyone (end users or colleagues) but just resonating about experiences we have all encountered in one way or another.

Well I work for an estate agency in Amanzimtoti. And the amount of stupid people here is astonishing. Some of them don't even know how to save a word document. And don't let me get started on showing them around the server documents.... Like how hard can it be for people to understand basic computer tasks?

Yeah IT ouens are soema kak, think they gods gift to the world...:ROFLMAO:
Lol I hear you man - I have learned to have so much respect for people who work in the service industry - and dealing with people (not just in IT) is just so hard ... I know there can sometimes be a generational gap and changes forced on users (admittedly) are pretty bad.

it just makes a world of difference when you are spoken to like a human is all.

I hear you - its astonishing how much of my job is end user training and not actual break fix.

I have a bud used to lecture at a Private university. Sometimes he would sit at my place and mark papers.. So a marketing report about Sunshine contains gems like this.
Sunshine is a good source of vitamin D. It can give you cancer and kill you if you have too much...
8 or 9 people have similar crap going on..
These geniuses get jobs at Old Mutual and Investec after they graduaate.

Where to start with this? Just so much you can take before you wish you could smack them through the monitor!

I recall once explaining to a person regarding the password policy to one of the systems.... "...cannot have two of the same characters next to each other, and cannot have two numerics (have to say numbers because they dont know what numerics are) next to each other as well..."

User proceeds to change their password (the above was just an extract of the password policy explained to them), and says, i still cannot change my password...i made it <whatever word the user typed in> and put 13 at the end...the 1 and the 3 are not next to each other on the keyboard so why is it not accepting?

i had to keep my cool, hold my nerve...and explain to the person that password policies usually apply to what you are typing in (as any reasonable person would deduct), not the location of the characters and numbers on the keyboard...

Seen something similar on Job postings we put out when asked about SPF, the response was about sunblock ...that shows you are so stupid that you can't even Google for the correct technical answer ans just take the first thing that shows up.

Whats shocking is dealing with other companies IT staff only to realize they have no idea what they are doing and shouldn't be in IT to begin with.
I used to work for one of those unfortunately ... even now as a seasoned veteran of IT - sometimes it is just a guess and click around and see ...

But the some of my colleagues ... dont get me started - he was recently dismissed for bringing down an entire company because he found a script on the internet, thought it would fix an issue, ran the script as an administrator ... bang .... everything went down.....

How would you feel if a mechanic called you stupid for not knowing that the thingy you are talking about is the solenoid or the universal joint? Just because you breathe technology does not mean other people do. This was a hard lesson for me to learn, but its something we all should learn in this industry.
But, saying that, basic IT literacy is an issue, because people get taught to follow a recipe of clicks instead of understanding concepts. Companies aren't willing to actually train their staff properly and move the burden to tech support.
Learn to explain things in a non technical way and through that teach the user the concepts they need to not be a burden on you next time.

As Albert Einstein said:
If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough.

Amen to this - like I said - a lot of my job these days is end user training and not fixing actual issues ... I do find a solace though in that end users are the best bug finders :)

To be fair though - everyone has a good winge about their clients - teachers in the staff room about their students, Ive overheard our accounting department shit talk the IT Department, Heck - My mechanic may have a good chuckle about the turkey sound I had in my engine last week :)

This is the kind of mentality that makes me regret getting into IT. Every aspect of IT whether software or hardware based is important to every other job function or department.

This bullshit needs to stop, respect each other, every department in a corporate organisation relies on the other. Yes, IT may be a constant drain on your budget, this is the world we live in and if you can't keep your IT department happy, then your business will likely fail. IT people should also be humble enough to understand that a companies ecosystem relies on all departments, not just IT and vice versa.

I didn't come here to vent about stupid people doing stupid things, that happens in every nook and cranny of this country.

Just respect each other, and understand that IT is there to SUPPORT your job function and whether you like it (or whether you like IT) or not, IT isn't going away any time soon.

I printed and framed a picture that is hanging in my old bosses wifes office that says,

Before Phoning IT

1. Is it plugged in
2. Did you try restarting it
3. Wait 5 minutes
4. Its now working

The amount of times i had to walk up 2 flights of stairs to plug a printer cable in or the mouse cable into the laptop is scary

Also had a sales girl that was thick as a door, This chick used those windows 8 sticky notes, not just 1 or 2, easily over 300 running at once, absolutely destroying the ram to the point that the laptop would crash. I bought her normal sticky notes to use, she stuck them on the laptop screen and complained that the laptop was broken because the mouse wasnt moving, like cos you can see through the 100 odd sticky notes stuck on the screen....

latest: We cannot allow those machines on our network. They are running Linux, which we have heard is a major security risk. Shap!

You think that's funny, have you ever asked an "IT Professional" to do something and get told they don't know how? Like, check the device manager... and get told how do I access the device manager...

This kills me more than the end user issues because I understand the concept of knowing one's job but having little clue as to what other people do.

Like Finance, for example, every time I walk into our Finance department, the people are either on their phones or YouTube or some other shit and you wonder if you've made some really bad life choices getting into IT

EDIT: and now I've been sucked into venting... FML

A friend had a internal policy where he worked (inhouse IT support) that users had to check the internal Wiki / atleast try one of 2 things before logging a ticket.

Its HUGE pain! On one hand, us IT nerds have enough ACTUAL shit to do to keep the plebs / company running so people can get their jobs done.. Then you have Wendy (No offence to any Wendy's reading this) asking how to do XYZ... I blame companies for not spending enough MONEY on training staff... They think "Well I pay IT xyz , they can somma do it" ... BUUUUUUUUUUT then when IT are too busy to take care of REAL shit like compliance, licensing, documentation, migrations, cost savings on projects so the big dogs can get their bonuses etc, then who is the doos... The IT guy naturally....

I have this plague of a user ... lets call im..... Darryl.

Darryl is the only member of staff out of 250 odd employees that has performance issues with his machine.

We have replaced his machine 3 times, we have upgraded his latest machine to 32GB of Ram (these are decent machines, i5 7500's)

We have recreated his account 3 times, we have repatched him, replaced all cables ... honestly we did it ALL.

He would log 3 tickets a day all regarding the same issue as opposed to just updating his current ticket.

He was running the standard applications, that we strictly vet, his colleagues do the same job with the same application and all is well with them.

Initially when he was still running on 16GB of ram, we had about 8 or 9 calls from him that day and out of frustration we thought maybe giving him more memory would help (i.e. the now 32GB of RAM) immediately after we returned his machine to him we got an email:

"IT,

Thank you so much for all of your help - all of my tickets - please close them - things are working amazingly well"

Thanks again."

We rejoiced.

1 week later - another email comes through.

"Doing the same thing again - its worse than ever"

-------

It turns out he has a terrible cocain addiction (he is in the financial sector in London so this is very common among high earning elites in London)

and he just doesnt have any patience.
HE frantically clicks around at things like crazy, not waiting for anything to load, and repeat clicks on things like excel when its crunching numbers ..... its insane. ... he has been quiet as of late though.
