Almost 25 years ago, the original PlayStation was introduced to the world. Developed by Sony Computer Entertainment, it was the first home console in video game history to ship 100 million units worldwide, offering consumers a chance to play games with real-time 3D rendered graphics in their homes for the first time.

Today, we are excited to announce that we are bringing back the original PlayStation experience in a new miniaturized version – PlayStation Classic! The console will come pre-loaded with 20 classic titles, including fan-favorites such as Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms.

The mini console is approximately 45% smaller than the original PlayStation, and it emulates the original’s look and feel by featuring similar controllers and packaging. Long-time fans will appreciate the nostalgia that comes with rediscovering the games they know and love, while gamers who might be new to the platform can enjoy the groundbreaking PlayStation console experience that started it all. All of the pre-loaded games will be playable in their original format.

Available for pre-order at select retailers across the US and CAN, each unit will also come with an HDMI cable to connect to their TV, a USB cable, and two controllers for local multiplayer within compatible titles. PlayStation Classic will be available for $99.99 USD (MSRP) / $129.99 CAN (MSRP) on December 3, 2018 – a historic date for all of us at PlayStation.

Visit PlayStation.com for more details on regional availability, and stay tuned to the Blog for the full lineup of titles coming to PlayStation Classic. There are more fan favorites, and we can’t wait to share more details in the coming months.

buy a R300 controller for PC and put the Playstation and Playstation 2 emulators on it and you have way more than the 20 included games. The console just doesn't feel worth it, seems like a cash grab from Sony

Of course its a cash grab. Any product a company releases is a cash grab.
What Sony is doing is actually allowing those that had to rely on pirating their older releases and running them on emulators to play the originals legally.
Unlike Nintendo, who is raining down hellfire on all forms of emulation while not allowing customers another avenue of experiencing those games.
Yes piracy is always cheaper, but still not legal.

Also, it takes effort and knowledge on how to setup emulators. I'd rather pay the $99 for the Playstation Classic, so I can just plug it in and play.

Downloading the games for personal use isn't technically illegal. It is immoral because you are not supporting the developers and are using someone else's property without their permission.

Piracy is the selling of someone else's property for personal gain which is wrongful. Also, for PS2 and PS1 games, if you can still find then - these bought versions usually will run on an emulator because a CD/DVD drive on PC can read them. Unfortunately a PC cannot read Nintento's proprietary discs they use for the SNES, Nintendo, etc.
So Nintendo really didn't make it easy for their games to be legally acquired and run on an emulator - but they wouldn't have thought about such things either but rather make it easier to do so now and spam more cash out of people.

A lot of emulators are aimed at the older consoles that you cannot find easily today.

I don't support piracy (anymore) as I prefer to pay for games and support the developers. Plus steam sales - how can you not scrape up cash for games [emoji4]

The PlayStation Classic would be awesome if it basically has the software to run the games and you can then purchase the games front Sony's Playstore instead of having a limited amount.

And to think I had my ps1 chipped then bought 1000 games in bangkok for next to peanuts ;))))

Meh. Not interested. Plus psone classics are available on PSN

No what Sony is doing is trying to get some NES Classic money. Most games they thought they could make money off of they've already re-released digitally about 5 times so it's not about giving people access to the games, purely about cashing in on the money Nintendo is printing from their re-release consoles (whilst being a bit less of a dick about it).

Also Emulation isn't illegal itself. How most people obtained their games is. Downloading them is 100% illegal (even if you own original discs). However sticking your old PS1 and PS2 discs into your PC is not remotely so.
