So I got myself a kraken g12 and a fractal design celsius s24 (240mm rad) for my 1070.
On air I could just about get 2100 MHz on peaks but I was thermally limited by gpu boost (you drop clocks at like 60C). I also didn't play around with memory OC cause I have micron memory and I dunno how to stress test it properly.
So now with liquid cooling I can reliably get 2140 MHz. I was naturally impressed with myself until I started playing around with memory OC's. Now with my +400 memory OC my core clocks drop to ~2050 MHz.
Now Gpu-z says I am power limited most of the time. I can't raise my power limit higher than 112% (cause it's an el cheapo card)

So is there a way to increase my power limit?
putting another resistor in parallel to the shunt resistors is on the table

You can only get that much power out of the card, modding it and all that wont be worth it

Sell it and buy a 1080
Ok I hear you but I would be easily paying double what I paid for my 1070 for a somewhat decent 1080.
I am not expecting a 2X perf increase but the ~18% performance increase just doesn't cut it for me.
I will also get another chance at the silicon lottery but considering what I got out of this card I will likely get a worse OC card

IMO an upgrade to a higher tier card or start from base clock frequencies and slowly work your way up. Use different bench marks and try it in gameplay.

The reason why people are telling you buy a better card is because its true.... If you prefer no to mod. If you just want to overclock for the fun of it then its up to you but if you want better performance from your card then yes upgrade. I have a 1070 and i noticed that newer games require an odd medium setting here and there for the 100fps+ game play (Your mileage may very) Just wait a few months as i wont be surprised if a few 1080/1080ti going on sale after the new 3000 series cards launch

Oh and buying a new card is a solution :) 🌹

I have edited my post so I am now open to mods

But what mods????!!!
I hath asked for the infinite wisdom of the interwebs for this reason

I'm have done a mod on a 1070min with cm 120aio and I'm getting about 2140mhz didn't bother ocing ram as not much boost in that. And the card would sometimes boost to just over 2200 but at its own will I get issues setting it to that via afterburner. Temps reach max 45deg. But on its air cooler no OC was running at almost 80deg in itx case.

But looked at the options of increasing power and yes it's possible and shouldn't cause any issues as the extra power will only be used when the card needs it. Make sure psu can take it on the 8pin.

I ended up removing my OC and card still auto oc to similar values as my manual settings seeing that my Temps never go up. Hope your ram is being cooled as the g12 bracket doesn't really cool them as much.

Forgot to mention that the cheaper cards might not have enough vrm to also handle the extra power you sending their way so they can die earlier

Look around techpowerup's bios database for one that would work with your card and has a higher power limit. Currently I flashed my 2080 ti with an XOC bios so I basically have 1000watt power limit. It work great with just about no clock drops due to power.

Thanks for the response.
I actually wanted to flash my bios to an EVGA one to get the "K boost" functionality but I have no idea on how to check if a bios would work with my card.
I have an "Axle" 1070 so I highly doubt I will find any resources on it.
