As title suggests, I need some tips on what i will need to get a functioning smart mirror.

I am not sure what i will need apart from : Monitor ( I have a 4:3 VGA), raspberry pi, some acrylic sheets, and wood for a frame. and a vga to hdmi converter...

Have any of you made one of these? How did it go?

Did a build quite some time back, what I found worked easier is I used an old android tab I had lying around instead of the monitor+RSBP etc.

Good luck, keen so see some pics once completed/

Wanna do it as well... Have watched a crap ton videos and downloaded plans... But that was last year

Keen to find out how you did it with the tab. I decided on using a pi because I want to get into playing around with them. I have an old monitor lying around. And a friend that does some awesome laser cutting.

Will share outcome provided I actually finish it.

Just remember that if you decide to have the mirror in a brightly lit area - you are going to battle to see the text through the one-way vinyl.

However, that aside:
- Honestly, if you are going to do this - look around an the forums for an old 16:9 screen that has a separate PSU and HDMI in.
21" should be a start - but bigger IS better. The separate power supply makes the mirror thickness less.

- Make sure that the cabinet you build behind the mirror has ventilation (when using the raspberry pi)

- for the filler around the screen, I think it's better to use high density foam instead of cardboard (swipe your significant other's yoga mat), because it secures the screen better

- Magicmirror2 is the easiest to get the software to work - but use what you are most comfortable with.

- DON'T try and display colour images - they wash out badly - black background, white text.

- Other than that - good luck !! it's a fun project

I definitely liked his build, but I would have gone with side mounting the speakers just to lessen that depth a bit

yes obviously know it will lose the whole mirror 'vibe' and in his case he wanted them hidden
