Sorry, I'm sure this is a very noob question - as far as I know ddr3 for laptops has a smaller form factor - how do people indicate the type they're selling on here?

Need to be sure I buy the right thing....

Plenty methods:

1. Google the model/name of the RAM. Like Toi said, SODIMM is laptop RAM, where most people here will sell ram for desktops 99% of the time.
2. Follow the link (which is why it's so important for people to post links wherever possible)
3. Ask the dude

Thanks Peeps

Point 2 is why admin's always ask me for links: here im thinking that a certain admin likes me:playful:
Point 3 sometimes gets missed buy the buyer when it is clearly stated in the post, but it never hurts to double check.

Point 4(Bonus) ask for pics on the post.

if I can ask a question on the memory related subject - will ddr3L memory work on a 2ng gen core-I (sandy bridge laptop?

(actually looking for feedback of someone who tried it and it worked - over a long period)

What I understand :
ddr3l memory should comply to the ddr3 spec - meaning DDR3L is dual voltage, and should be able to run at either 1.5 or 1.35v.
the DDR3L memory should work in a DDR3 lappy, but some of the integrated memory controllers will pick it up and switch to 1.35v, but the controller itself might not function at 1.35v in some instances
the reverse isn't true, and even though using ddr3 memory on 4th gen core-I meant for DDR3L should work. it isn't recommended. However the integrated memory controller most likely will be damages over time from the overvolting.

any personal experiences?

Best is to Google the laptop and revision of the board you are using. This will point to a firmware update and a recommended list of memory to use.

the short version of it - I tested it a short while ago, and it does work on the laptop in question.

the long version: I purchased 4 x 8gb ddr3l for a 2nd generation core I-5 lappy currently with 8 gb of ram, to take it up to 32 gb.

(No, I am not on something - its a dell precision M4600, it has 4 x memory slots)

first replaced the memory in the 2 x "normal" slots at the bottom with ddr3l memory- and it worked perfectly fine. then tried the two beneath the keyboard, first with the ddr3L memory (didn't work) then with the ddr3 memory that was in (didn't work either) and previously we have tried ddr3 memory (which didn't work - we thought it was the memory)

so the 2 x slots under the keyboard is faulty, but the ddr3L memory works perfectly in the other two slots - at least the memory went from 8 gb to 16 gb
