Hoping for some advice (for a friend) on what path to take with Artisanal training courses

+1 to NSFAS

If his family earns less than R350 000 per annum, he can get a full-paid bursary to study almost anything.

He will need a matric certificate only and proof of his parent's income to complete the application.

For the initial application online, you just need his ID and parent/guardian ID that will be responsible for paying the college/uni/TVET registration fees (which will be paid back should he get NSFAS funding)

Do it quick, applications for 2022 close on 7th January 2022 and he will have to wait until November 2022 to apply for 2023.

If he's young and driven, don't limit him to a trade, get him a degree/diploma.
Epic, really appreciate that!!

I did apply earlier & will chat to him this evening to get the specifics sorted.

Family is definitely below R 350k pa (his Mom does poetry bits and him + his brother do odd semi-qualified jobs & quiz mastering).

His motivation and drive is problematic but I see the guy as having a lot of potential & want to help push him past this slump (to show that the past/present does not necessarily dictate the future).

Not sure how that works. Find out what he wants to do as a trade and take it from there. You never too old, Im 40 now. I might only be where I wanted to be 10 years back, in 10 years time only.
Hang in there! Better late than never!

PM me your number, it's easier than you think

The trades can be solid options, especially for branching out internationally. What is in vogue changes of course so I'm not qualified to comment on what good options are right now.

My cousin dropped out of university and his girlfriend's father was having none of it. He was a farmer and was building, set my cousin to work as a brick layer! He progressed and eventually worked as a plant manager for Corobrik I think. Now is in KZN doing nicely for himself.

Wife's relative lost everything to a dodgy business partner decades ago. He headed to the US to try and build a life again (his family stuck in SA). He became a boiler maker, also progressed and is a partner is the company. Whole family live in the Deep South and have gun racks with vehicles attached to them for mobility. Good earning and a very comfortable life now.

Just chatted to him this evening - he is not really keen on looking at the idea of studying anything at all (even though he just has a Matric).

Thanks to everyone who put in input - I am a bit shocked as I thought he would want to move beyond their current means (seems not) 🤷‍♂️

Sad but I'm actually pissed at him now. He needs a klap

Bud, Bell Equipment offer good apprenticeship. Opportunities to travel as well. I went to England, some other appies went to Germany, America, Congo, Asia. There's lots of potential if you show interest and make the most of it. I like Bell over other companies because of the potential to travel.
Worth checking the website.
In general you can't go wrong with a trade. The old people say it and it's rather true. He should do what interests him most.
Big ups to you for doing what others cant/won't for him bud.
Very important this. ^^^
The ultimate success or level of success with whatever path he takes, will be directly proportional to how much he enjoys it/ is interested in it.
I've seen first hand youngsters throw away apprenticeship opportunities because they simply weren't interested enough(or didn't have enough drive).

I just wanted to stress that point of interest=longevity and trades are long term things.

I don't know what age your friend is but all the best with whatever you get for him. It's really a great thing you're doing. Some people have potential but no opportunities and you're gonna give him one. 👍🍻

Haha, i didn't read the whole thread. My bad. 🤷‍♂️
