Hi guys,

Wondering if someone can give me a guesstimate cost on the replacement of the cambelt, V-belt and the tensioner pulley for the lot on a 2013 Honda CR-V 2.0 Petrol. A possible person to fix it in/around Pretoria Moot area or alternatively someone who could do it in a day in Fourways/Bryanston area would also be great.

Dealer quoted me around R8k which I don't think is bad at all, but obviously I'm aware of what Honda spares cost and am also looking at possible alternative prices/places.

Any info would be excellent! :p

Honestly at R8K I would just let the dealer do it, and you also get a nice warranty then if something else goes bust they have to fix it, DIY Mechanics can either save you a lot of money, or cost you a lot of money, and a 2013 is still a newish car I think, so I there is still plenty of value that can depreciate, if its done at the dealer then it also helps for that resale value, albeit not a whole lot, but yeah to some people stuff like that matter.

Yeah I'm just not sure what the dealer actually knows in the matter, to be honest. I've known for a while that it's "going", and last time they said it looks wonky they quoted me R11k for just the pulley and cambelt. This time it included the addition of the V-belt and then they priced it at R7,700. I know the thing is going, but it's not critical to do right now (even the mechanic at the garage said it'll keep going for a while still), but the whining noise it's making is kinda annoying, so I'm starting to look around.

Look I'm not asking a backyard DIY mechanic who's replaced the chains on 2 bicycles to do this, just wondering if someone has an idea. TBH I can even do it myself, it's a VERY simple bolt off bolt on jobbie to replace the pulley (the belts are still fine, they're just being replaced as part of the package since they don't cost much), but I need numbers :D

Mmm last time I had my timing belt service, was about R2,300 for the kit which included the belts, tensioner, pulley and water pump.
Just checked the part number on SKF's site and ordered.
Had the whole lot replaced at our local Diesel Electric / Bosch franchise (which is excellent, not sure about those in PTA etc), I'll see if I can dig up the cost for the labour but it wasn't excessive.
This was for a 2007 Fiat Grande Punto diesel, not the most common car on the road, so Honda kit might be a bit cheaper?

Not all work has to be done by the agents. When my Renault's CV-Joint had to be replaced and I phoned the Renault service department for a quote, the guy first asked me if I am sitting down. I cannot remember but it was something like R14K. He even suggested to phone around as I WILL get better prices, go figure. Well, at the end I had it done at a cost of around R2.5K fitment included. It was not a backyard mechanic, but a well established company named CV-Doctor that operated in town for as long as I can remember. So I believe their work should be just fine. So why the big difference between R14K and just R2.5K for the same work and parts?

I never even thought about the Bosch service centre - that one would be a winner. Think I'm going to give them a try quickly!

I've just had good experiences with Diesel Electric, so hopefully you will have the same. Not sure if they the same as the Bosch service centres though?
Also please post parts / service cost if you can, also interesting to see different vehicles cost

Called Bosch. Oke's not very optimistic about finding a pulley for a better price. Will update once he gets back to me.

Seems the best Bosch can do is R7.4k.

Car's going in to dealer today. R7,655 is the quoted price. They'll replace the fanbelt and the tensioner with the pulley assembly. Yay.

All quotes fell so close to dealer pricing, I ended up going with dealer. Some places even exceeded it. Anyway, turns out it was the Alternator Belt, the Automatic Tensioner Assembly as well as the actual Tensioner Pulley that needed replacement. Total cost for parts + labour was R7,651.84 which, IMO, isn't that bad at all.

Car is running as quiet as a kitten right now. The bearing whine is gone. Worst part? It's quieter than it was when I bought it, so I think I bought it and the garage knew about it, but since it's ~18 months later there's not much I can do about it now.
