Hello fellow Carbonite bikers,

Recently I am having issues with trying to start my bike. It's a 2008 Honda CBX 250 Twister. So, going to work the bike would start fine and then once I am at my destination, the bike won't start. There is no fading of lights or any of my instruments during the ride and I had just bought a new battery, so I don't think it can be the alternator not charging the battery, plus I fully charged the battery 2 days ago. This morning, which has been a cold morning here in CPT, the bike wouldn't start at all so I had to push start it. As much as I don't mind push starting it (been a free gym session), I am scared that I am now doing damage in the long run. I have a suspicion it can be either the regulator or the starter, but all in all, my knowledge of the bike comes from reading the maintenance manual.

So if you have any advice or a solution, please help.

Thanks in advance :)

Does it make a sound when trying to start it eg. does the motor swing or try to swing over?

Forgot to mention that. There is no starting or swinging sound. Just a dull clicking noise below me. Hence why I suspect it's the starter.

Back in the day I had a CBR150, only issue ever was a clicking noise. My cable to the starter was loose, so the bike would short and not start.
Things to check, check if the battery cables are rust free. Check if the cables to the starter are rust free. Its also possible that the starter is stuck, try give it a good hiding with a RUBBER malet. That did work a few times on mine.
My starter was under the bike towards the front so I could see the starter and cable from the front wheel. Maybe yours is in the same spot.

Had a similar issue with my own Twister last year. Sounds like a starter problem. Luckily mine wasn't serious. I put a small piece of wood against the starter and gave it a few taps with a hammer (no mallet available, hence the piece of wood). Started first time after that and never did it again. If the starter tapping trick doesn't work then check the connections and cables to the starter.

Also, if come unstuck and want to start googling around for solutions, don't forget that the Twister is also known as a CBF 250 internationally, so try googling that as well.

also check voltages of battery when:

1. bike not running and no ignition
2. bike not running and ignition on
3. for this one get a friend - voltage drop as you start the bike.
4. voltage of battery while bike running
5. voltage of battery while reving the bike

Usually a clicking is a battery with a dead cell. Have the battery tested, it's free.

I will get this tried. Only issue is the bike doesn't start without a push start at the moment so can only do 2 of the tests for now.

Its the starter solenoid. That starter needs to be replaced/repaired, Like Ovisser said check if there's a short leading to the starter moter

keep the volt meter connected while trying to start, even if it just ticks. If the battery is not charged it will drop and you will still see it

one thing to also try, My brother still has his high school bashan 250rr. That thing's battery is notoriously kak.
I use a car battery to start it. No issues ever. Just don't start the car while jumping or it will fry your fuses !
I am no mechanic or electrical engineer but it works. That'll tell you immediately if its the battery or starter.

I feel a disclaimer is in order.
This works for me and I cannot guaranty that it will work for you without causing any harm to your bike. If something does go wrong, this Bashan is worth about R4k anyways. Please don't blame me for a melted honda harness .

This is a way. Connecting the positive only and the negative to the frame away from paint

Yea, But isn't that how you're supposed to jump-start anything and everything ?

Step 1: Sell Twister
Step 2: Buy 1000cc bike
Step 3: Get everywhere much quicker and have more fun
Step 4: Problem solved
:p

I'm Joking

Looks like a issue with the starter motor, though it seems that everyone else has already suggested things to try out.

FTFY, Since I bought my 650 and then my 1000cc I have not once had starting issues, or any issues for that matter.... They just keep on going...

When I bought my Z1000 I got the service manual with, the last major service was in June 2013.Since that service till the day I bought it a few months ago it only did 200km. Had to run start it the first time, took it around the block and now still going strong on the same battery.

Hi. I am interested to know what the solution was? I am sitting with the same problem, and with my lack of mechanical skills, tried some of the suggestions in the thread, also have a new battery etc. And checked contacts. But still nothing.

It was my starter. The brushes in it were worn.
