Hi, looking on advice fro security cameras. specifically on Hikvision.

Want to know if IP cams are the way to go, or if normal cams can be acessed via an app while away from the site.

If its for your home, rather go with normal cabled Hik Vision Cam system.
Works out cheaper and you can just connect the Dvr to your router and use the Hik Vision connection site for internet viewing.

Schweet, makes sense. i was worried that the DVR for the analouge cams could not connect to the internet, but from your post, sounds lie they do.

Look into Zoneminder maybe? Think you should be able to use either

Hik Vision is the way to go,All new Dvrs have lan connection,so just follow steps and all will be cool .

So does zoneminder replace the dvr/nvr ? it looks like its just software. or do i still need a dvr ? and then this access the cameras from there ?

I would rather use HikVisions own software.
But hey thats me :D

Personally i would go IP, but all hik recordees ive worked with in the last few years, all had network cards, and remote apps(ivms4500/hikconnect/ezviz)

Great stuff guys, i will now ponder the decision. I already have 2 IP cams but not yet connected. i tested them and all works well with te software. was just thinking about the expansion, and the need for dvr.

Yes, you'd need to use a PC + capture cards or a POE switch.

If OP is using Hikvision cameras + NVR/DVR then ya this would be the easist.
