GTX 1080 Aorus Xtreme Edition Help Pls :'(

Hey guys!

I am ready to pull my hair out of my head!

Please can someone help me identify which header is for which cable? My GPU fans have not been working properly, so I thought I'd try and see if something was connected incorrectly (bought it on Carb).

Now for the life of me I can't tell which cable goes where.

There are 4 cables and 5 headers on the PCB. All identical 4-pin mini connectors. For the sake of clarity, the 'top' is the side of the PCB opposite the gold PCIe fingers (same side as the 2 8-pin PCI power sockets). 'Right' is the side of the internal VR HDMI ports (with the orange dummies) etc etc.

1 AORUS logo LED (cable is short and can only reach the 'top' 2 headers)
1 Fan Stop LED (also a short cable but can reach the upper vertical header above the internal HDMI ports as well as both of the 'top' headers)
1 X LED for the front X on the shroud (seems to only be able to reach the 'bottom' 2 headers closest to the internal HDMI ports)
1 fan harness (absolutely not a clue where it goes but the harness cable is long and was stuck to the inside of the shroud, closest to the internal HDMI ports, and can reach any port)

I've tried using a process of elimination, but no luck so far, and it's super annoying having to take this thing apart and reassemble on every attempt.

I realise I have gone about this like a complete tool, but I am manically trying to get it to work without knowing what could be wrong, and it's severely affected my ability to think.

Any help would be appreciated.

At 3:26 he takes the PCB off the cooler and notes which cable goes where. He doesn't specify what each cable does, but it may be possible to figure it out based on the location. Also worth noting it's the 1080 Ti, not the 1080, but I'd be surprised if they're very different.

There are other teardown/PCB analysis videos on YouTube too which may help.

I have managed to get the fans powered up, so I'm assuming I have the correct config now, but I'm still having the original issue; the master fan spins at 100% even when the card is cool and the fan stop LED is on.
 
Not my forte but perhaps this will help. Also, you can continue the conversation then switch to Gemini "LIVE" and physically point out what is happening. You will have to give the verbal command to "look again" because it doesn't analyse in real-time, only snap-shots. Hopefully it's not a buggered pin... Gemini Conversation

Have you tried using other software to control the fan speed, like Fan Control?

I'm not an expert on this, but I think there's a chance that an incorrect connection could still cause the issue you're having. If the RGB header is supplying 12V constantly and the fan is connected to it, then the fan could end up running at 100% no matter what.

Are you getting the fan speed reported anywhere? If yes, a (very dodgy) test you can (but probably shouldn't) do, is gently press the centre of the fan with your finger, causing it to slow down and stop. If you watch the fan speed readout , it should drop to 0% and then pick up again as the fan spins up. If it doesn't, you may have connected the fan to the wrong header.

Thanks for your suggestion! I have tried both Gemini and ChatGPT, uploaded images and provided as much info as I could, including the header codes labelled on the PCB. Apparently the schematics are not available online, so their suggestions are pretty much just guesses :|

Good idea, and I have tried using Afterburner, but the fan control slider is greyed out. I learned recently that some setting needs to be changed to make this accessible, but haven't gotten that far yet. The strangest thing is that, when I had the fans connected to the (what I assume to be) incorrect headers, HWiNFO did show fan activity in the % reading, but the fans did not spin. Now that they are powered, the reading stays at 0 no matter what. D:

It is also possible that the GPU has a built-in fan stop feature; they only come on at certain temps.

There's a setting I'm Afterburner called something like "enable low-level hardware fan control" which is the one to try.

Fan Control is also great software to, uh, control fans. I've used it daily for years now. And it can control GPU fans. You may need to set it to "force" control on those fans.

Also also, check in Nvidia settings, for a setting called aomething like "power management," where you can choose Prefer Maximum Performance or Balanced (I think). Try that one too.

But yeah I think if fan speed is showing 0% but the fans are spinning, you're probably on the wrong header.

Or it's broken. Might be time to let someone who repairs GPUs to take a look? @odtech or @mjclaas?
 
Yes mine does, but it's not functioning correctly even after temps have risen above 60 degrees :|
Try the Afterburner method to force them to 100%. If they still don't spin, it's likely a hardware issue, possibly dead fans.

The problem is not that they're not spinning, it's that they're spinning at 100% no matter what.

I am at my wit's end, because I have tried all 5 headers and only get them spinning on the J12 header (far-right).

Or it's broken. Might be time to let someone who repairs GPUs to take a look?

I was really hoping I wouldn't have to spend money, but you are right. I might just sell it as-is.
 

This is according to the video. Not clear which LED cable goes where, but it shouldn't make too much difference apart from RGB software control. As for the one that spins 100% - There should be another fan connection inside the shroud around the middle of the longer side. Maybe check for damage or a connection issue there. Sounds like a PWM signal issue

I think there's definitely a signal issue, fans did not spin when I tried that header. Thanks for the feedback.

I think there's a bit of confirmation bias going on but this seems correct from what I've tried, thank you! At least I know I'm not hallucinating.
I'm going to PM you, hope you don't mind me asking you a few questions. I might want to make use of your services if they are available.
