a sad first thread to post here, but trying to keep it together

been nearly 2 weeks since our Yorkie, Tinkie, hasn't been eating

going on 15yrs, it was told that the old age does tend to not let them want to eat too much, but this was unexpected

started getting weak in her legs so got some stuff from vet like a tonic and some anti-biotics for incase

today sadness struck, even though to us she has been getting more 'aware' after the stuff from vet, she still didn't start eating

took her to vet to see if she will need a drip, but....

according to vet she has been suffering for a while (according to xrays her heart was f'd)

they could give stuff to prolong her life, but it would have been cruel to make her suffer more with no promise of getting better

had to be put out 😭

as cruel as this may sound, but I haven't felt this sad even when my grandfathers passed

so today we had a part of our hearts cut out and it will take a while to get fixed

sad to say, but no more pets from here on out

RIP TINKIE...
WE WILL FOREVER MISS YOU.
FOR THOSE TOUGH DAYS WHEN COMING HOME YOU SIT AND WAIT FOR US, JUST TO MAKE SURE WE ARE OK.
FOR THOSE SNEAKY FARTS (thanx @Presler) THAT ONLY REALLY BOTHERED US WHEN IT WAS RIGHT IN OUR FACES.
FOR MAKING US FEEL SOMETHING WHEN THE WHOLE WORLD GOES TO CRAP.
THE JOYFUL, THE ANNOYING, THE SAD.

WE WILL KEEP YOU IN OUR HEARTS FOREVER.

We live in a world that we we're not raised for. We have to adapt ourselves, our SO's, our children, how we live, eat, even how we breathe. Inevitably, this will change more and more I guess.

We need a constant, something that when all goes for a ball of shit, that one thing that remains our hook to sanity. And that my dear friend, is our doggos. They don't care about the world out there, you are their world.

2012 I went down a similar route with our 19yo Maltese/Foxie. Doggo had a heart of gold, lived 19 years and 7 days, most loved white ball of fur I can ever remember. And now, our two yorkies have taken the same stance in our house. Both will nearly die when you get home, 2 hours or 8 makes no difference, their tails wag so hard their asses can't keep up. The polony shaped one literally smiles at you, the little one will leak oil almost every single time from happiness, so much so that I always let him out the door first before greeting so he don't wizz on the house floor.

How can one live without such undivided love? I cannot think about that inevitable day, so I feel for you brother. Remember all the good times, and cry. Don't hold back. Cry unashamedly because you've lost a part of your life, in essence, you've lost a child.

Took our beloved woef (Great Dane crossed with Labrador) for his trip West about three hours ago - was not ready for all the tears that came after that.
“Go in peace! I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are an evil.”

Dammit, gonna miss the afternoon walks and overjoyed leaping and barking when he saw me approaching with the leash.

All the best, truly understand this as the only kids we have is our doggie kids and have been through this process.

It is one of the toughest decisions to take, but our vet always say, when it gets really bad it has been bad for a while already and we should not let them suffer because we are not strong enough to make the right decision.

One of our current doggie kids is a Yorki, and they are just very different to any other breed. They are truly special.

Strongs man it will get better i know this because in 2019 our house burned down lost 1 x cat and 1 x doggy our 2 other cats survived .I tried to rescue them but i was not allowed to go into the house while it was burning i did not even care about the stuff inside only wanted to save them. This year we had to put down one more cat i did not want to even go with, but in the end i could not let my wife do it alone. So now we only have one kitty left.I still struggle to get over what happened it's not easy...

Shame so sorry to hear bro. I know the feeling[emoji3064] had to put down my 20 year old Wollie and 17 year old Snippy. Literally had them since I was a small kid. Strongs bro! [emoji1374][emoji3064]

I haven't had to put down a pet, but I've lost a kitten, Smokey, to a neighbour's dog that broke through a door. My wife told me about it and I left work, by the time I'd gotten home and had made my way through the bloodbath his body was ice cold and his eyes were glassed over, but it didn't stop me from trying to resuscitate the little bugger.

I'd only had him for 3 months, but in that time I'd spent the first night forcing food down his throat every few hours as he wouldn't eat or drink (literally had half a dozen alarms set for the night).

He was MY cat - everyone else's ankles were fair game to a bite or scratch (and not in a playful way), but I'd never had more than a slight nibble from him.

I could also do what I liked with him, I used to slide him across the kitchen floor like a bowling ball and he'd come back for more. Haha, one day it had rained and the stoep was wet, he slid straight out the door and off the edge. Still came back for more fun and games.

I could swim with him - as long as I was around he didn't give the slightest toss about getting wet.

When my wife got up he decided it's time for me to wake up and would lick my cheek until I woke up... even if it was 3am and she was just going to the bathroom.

He would sit on my shoulder ALL DAY like a parrot if he could. I have another cat like that now, she climbs whatever it takes (even if it's my legs/torso... sigh) to get to my shoulder from time to time, but she doesn't LIVE there.

These last two points combine into he wouldn't sleep unless he was cuddled to my neck. If in bed, he'd be wrapped around the back of my neck. If up, he's sleep on my shoulder.

I haven't lost a kid and don't plan to, but I'll bet losing a pet is the next worst thing.

@WhoIsJOB those moments are what makes it so difficult to let go of

I am even now still, at night time when I come and sit at my PC and just relax, finding myself looking over to the bed to see if she is lying there

my dad when he makes food, especially the mince and rice/spaghetti nights, he would drop her some raw mince and still does it every few times

my mom has her little shrine of Tinks so I hear her every now and then as she talks to 'her'

14yrs will not be forgotten so easily and although I would like it to get easier, in a sense I wouldn't want it to go away, as it shows me we truly loved her to bits

if you can forget about them overnight, was there really any worthwhile bond then?

@TJ_Online eish... we only have 1 pet that unfortunately went in a very bad way and that is not something I would want to go through

it was our Jackie and he unfortunately drowned.... was during winter and because he was so old, our thoughts are that he must have gotten a fright from the sudden cold water which kind of incapacitated his senses not allowing him to be able to get out :(

that morning, I think if I was the one to find his body I would have cracked

our list of companions is as follows:
- Tinkie, Put to rest (age)
- Kiddo, Put to rest (age)
- Bobbie, Put to rest (age and think he had a stroke. he did that thing where he walks in a circle)
- Jazzy, Put to rest (had a stroke overnight)
- Chaka, Put to rest (age)
- Chickie, Put to rest (had a recurring cancer tumor in her hind leg and could not continue cutting it away as she was already very skinny to begin with)
- Dumbo, Given away at old age
- Fluffy, Given away at old age
- Bubbels, Given away at old age
- Shasha, Put to rest (age)

besides being at an age where worrying about a new dog is just a bit too tiresome, having to dread THAT day again and again just isn't going to work out anymore

we loved our moments of fun with them, whether it be having a swim or just playing fetch with a tennis ball, but wanting to prolong a life at the cost of pain and suffering, just didn't make it worth it

Reading the above makes me realize I had it easy with him. Y'all really went through some tough times with the pets :(

I knew it was coming from last week and so I went for a few walks before today and gave him (more than the usual) boerewors from the braai last night for his final meal.
He was already refusing to eat his usual bowl of dog food for the past 2 weeks and I could see he was tired and not as strong when we went walking.

When I got to the vet, another dog was just going in for a check-up but tried making a solid u-turn as soon as he stepped through the door - made me laugh a bit.
Mine just strolled in and immediately started sniffing around (his signature habit) until we put him on the table, tail still wagging.
When the confirmation was given that the grey curtain had rolled back, and all turned to silver glass, the vet remarked that at least he was still happy when we put him to sleep, with reference to the wagging tail.
That brings a little comfort - but a lot of tears nonetheless.

Strongs to everyone going through this.

reading through all this is ruff even our little pooch we love her so much and she is just a ball of joy they are smiles then we have a bad day there love and companionship cant be explained and on top of that some of our furry kids live better lives than some people i know

I am so sorry to hear. I suffered a loss in Feb 2020 when my ex partner decided to sign my dog (Baby) golden retriever away to the SPCA and I couldn't get him back, I still think about him and miss him so much. It drives me mad wondering where he is and how he is knowing he should have been by my side until his last days, he was only 5 and I had him since he was 10months old. I miss my boy and wish I could get him back.

Sorry, it absolutely hurts to lose them. I ended up losing mine in October 2020 from kidney failure at the age of 14. She was actually in relatively good health and spirits until the last few days of her life when she started acting abornal and was not herself. Vomiting, sad and even sleeping in the garage which she never did.

The vet did tests which confirmed the worst and we had to put her to sleep.

I don't think I will ever get another dog.

It's a cruel world we do live in...My wife and I have discussions quite often, when we look into the eyes of two of our oldest furr kids, and knowing that one day we have to face reality. One can never be prepared for the heartache that will follow, after loving and caring for them for so many years...
We have a German Shepherd & Miniature Schnauzer thats 11yrs old now, both of them have issues which no one can fix, we can only make it less discomforting for them. But later on it was made aware that Arthritis is common within German Shepherds. We get painkillers monthly from our vet, as he still has life in him, and we are not ready to say goodbye to him...but our biggest problem,is our Miniature Schnauzer, she is blind in both eyes now, and sugar illness as well as kidney problems now too...she has her moments of eating well, and then some days she skips breakfast and eats in the evening. While skipping one meal a day would be ok,although a concern when you know she loves to eat, but when she starts skipping both meals a day raises another a higher level of concern. Although that has not happend yet, but if that does happen, then alot of things will happen afterwards and her health will detoriate.

We have fpur dogs in total and a persian cat. They all got use to eachother and we love them all like we will love children. Its never a pleasant part of our lives and even theirs, when we have to say goodbye to them. I know exactly how it feels, and i feel your pain. God bless.

The dog in my profile picture died in January this year, age 15. He had cancer in his glands and stopped eating, so I had to take him to the SPCA to be put to sleep. It was heartbreaking seeing him close his eyes and fall asleep, never to wake up again. Comfort yourself knowing that you gave your pet a very good life.

we have always had furry friends around us, whether it was ours or my sister's

however for us it has become too sad to know that the inevitable will be upon us and we can't do that again

also, Tinks left an impression that we doubt we will ever achieve again (besides us being older now and having to worry about indirect things that would influence us having another dog)

we have been fortunate enough to only have 1 very sad death (not that having them put down was any better) and that was when our Jackie drowned ;( ;( ;(

it is truly sad when you look at the neighbors and see how they neglect their pets, not giving that after thought before actually getting them :(

So sorry to hear she looked like a gorgeous Companion to have 🤗

Good day sorry to hear about the loss tou have suffered. I can sympathize with you as we had a special dog that was with us for almost 19 years. He was our protector and always greeted us in his own special way. As he got older he got slower but still when ever we got home he was there with his special greeting.

It takes time to heal but you might find that because of the love you received from Tinkie you might find your heart pines again for that love and affection. Just remember no animal will ever replace the love and memories you shared with Tinkie. But the new pet will also bring love and affection and help you make new memories should you choose to adopt another pet in the future.

Our fur babies are never forgotten and always remembered as they are just as special as the family members we have

I read this thread a while back and saw all the deep and touching messages and stories.

Little did I think today I will be sharing mine… Later today we will unfortunately be saying goodbye one last time to our beloved four-legged, barking friend. He’s had a great 14 years but his age has caught up to him mentally and physically the past 4 months. After a week of deliberation and a vet appointment we’ve made the tough decision that he deserves to go to a better place.

Reading this thread made me feel a bit more prepared for what lies ahead this evening. The thread is truly a blessing in disguise.
