Hi Guys ,

can someone point me in the direction of some official information on this , i want to replace the thermal pads on my gigabyte 3080 but i dont want to void the warranty. apparently some brands allow it like EVGA , but i cant find anything from gigabyte SA about this

SA companies are not capable maintaining warranties as is, let alone with you opening the thing to change pads.

Dam Daniel, why you wanna do dat?
Are the stock ones supposed to be that inferior?

Some have said that it voids the warranty. Obviously if you have to rma it and you send it in with different pads then suppliers will look for any reason to void the warranty.
However, if you do it smartly, I don’t see they could find out. I have taken out the original pads and kept them safely in a zip lock.
There are no seals that need to be broken to open the card. If I need to rma, I will open it again and replace with the original pads.

btw, the new gigabyte cards seems to have better pads and also include pads on the backplate.

Bear in mind that’s it’s still risky though.

If I may ask, which new Gigabyte cards do these happen to be? 👀

I have a gaming oc that’s about 2 months old. Had no thermal pads on the backplate and the pads on the front just gave off oil. So I replaced them with thermal grizzly and added backplate.

The new gaming oc I got about 2 weeks ago seems to be a lot better and has pads on the back as well. It actually runs better than my older one with thermal grizzly.

Now I just have 2k worth of gelid pads that I bought expecting to change them.

Having spare thermal pads, paste or other stuff is never bad so I’m sure it’s worth holding onto them.

It’s really cool that they fixed their crap though. I don’t suppose you took one of those Gaming OCs off Senshi?

Yeah, will keep them. Maybe they will increase in value like everything else these days.

Nope.

Nope.
Regardless I’m really glad you shared this info. Might have more confidence going for a Vision card.

They probably got a lot of negative feedback about the pads and decided to fix them.

hope it lasts though... time will tell.

I hope they do, would only be a good sign for everyone else as well. All this talk about Gigabyte thermal pads and dangerous G6X temps leads me to wonder how fucked my 3080 Eagle I sold way back in January is now.

sorry for the late reply

ive confirmed with gigabyte this does NOT void your warranty , HOWEVER if you mess up and do it inproperly they will not honor the warranty

so take that as you will

guys I need help. I have a Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3080 TURBO 10G GV-N3080TURBO-10GD. I have put 2mm pads on the vram and 1mm on the other components. However, I don't think my CPU is not touching the heatsink 😢what can I do? Should I tighten the screws or change the pads to 1mm??

Theses pads are shit expensive I cant believe it didnt work first time.

What size pads did it have originally? Depends on what pass you used. Thermal grizzly Is a bit on the hard side.

I think I used 2mm for the backplate and on the front I used 1 and 1.5mm.

You shouldn’t over tighten anything. Remember they get extremely hot when in use and cools down when off meaning there’s lots of expansions and contractions. Those tiny screws could get damaged.

Hey man what a nightmare, everything was 1mm except the back plate which I left off because it was causing a heat spot. I bought Gelid Extremes which are nice and compressible. I got 10C off when mining. Old -> 98C, New -> 88C, FAN: 100%. The Turbo is generally a avg card. Looking for a AIO cooler instead of the blower style.

How loud is the turbo fan? That two slot form factor works wonders for sffpc cases.

Please don't try this at home. Get the pressure slightly wrong and you're absolutely fucked because you will break the solder joints and unless you have the ability to reball the chips and resolder, not just reflow them you've likely bricked it completely. If you didn't just break a trace or something as well or short out something in the process.

I solder regularly & I'm pretty sure you are at a very low risk of breaking the solder joints. Breaking a trace? I doubt it aswell. A short would be possible, if the shim was much wider than the VRAM module & bent / warped / dropped, to make contact with some trace's.

That said, as far as I know the biggest risk is applying too much pressure when tightning the cooler & as a result you may crack the memory module. Happy to be wrong if you have some proof to add to your claim :)
