Hi all!

Hope someone could help me out. I’m looking to get internet to one of my cottages. Its about 300m from my home(which has internet) and I have a clear line of site, what would be the best and most affordable way to go about this?

Thanks in advance!

Hi

Use 2 nano bridges from ubiquity around R800 each also a wifi AP for the cottage and you are set. I have 2 lite beams brand new and a wifi ap if you want to do it.

Thanks sbotha for the answer! Much obliged.

I can vouch for the Ubiquiti route. I have a house connected to my network roughly 80m from mine but without VLOS to the antenna specifically - (2 heavily leaved trees in the way) and the antennas connect just fine. I do only get an "ok signal" reported back, but with UL and DL speeds of 200mbps. Easy to install and config, and you hardly ever have to faff with them once configured...

Could someone provide me a specific Ubiquiti model, just trying to figure out which one is best to get for my site.

If you use an omni antenna you could have one at the house set as Station and the one at the cottage set as AP, set the bridge up through MAC address link and you're good to go without the need for an additional AP in the cottage.

If you do want an AP inside the cottage as well, beam antennas would be awesome, anything in the Nanostation range would be great, the Nanostation M5 Loco is awesome, I have 2 set up over 1.1km at the moment through some trees and we get great signal.

With clear line of sight, even the M2 Loco will be more than enough.

Quick question,

Is it possible to install only one M2 or M5 at the house that transmits a strong WIFI signal to the cottage? Or is it preferred to have two for better performance and stability?

Bear in mind that it’s not just about getting a wifi signal from the AP to a device in the cottage; it’s also about the device in the cottage being able to get a signal back to the AP.
Blasting the cottage with a strong wifi signal only does half the job; your signal might look great but performance will suck.

Thanks gigglz,

Ok so I'm currently looking at this for my setup.

2x Ubiquiti NanoStation Loco 5GHz AC 13dBi CPE
1x Unifi UAP (Green Rings) inside the cottage

Will this suffice? Again I would much prefer to buy the whole kit second hand if possible even if its older tech. Living in the middle of nowhere my internet speeds are maximum of 6 - 8mbps if I'm lucky so network performance is not that big a deal.

What it boils down to is, the cottage needs basic internet connectivity and I need the most bang for buck solution.

A moerse long LAN cable xD

But I agree, 2 nano's & an AP.

Quick question regarding Ubiquiti NanoStation Loco 5GHz AC 13dBi CPE. Do I need to purchase additional POE adapters or can these units be powered by the switch/AP I plug it into?

depends if its a POE switch and what type of POE standard it delivers but if you asking then its most likely you have a non POE switch and you will need adapters

Thanks Tidy, yeah unfortunately my current switch doesn't support POE. So adapters it is!

Hahaha, trust me I thought about it. Its unfortunately just over the limit in range :(
Maybe fibre could work with fibre to ethernet media converters at either end and then a normal wifi router in the cottage. Have seen this used for industrial applications.

the splicing alone will cost more than the PTP's

Final question regarding the Ubiquiti NanoStation Loco 5GHz AC 13dBi CPE. Hopefully someone could help.

On amazon reviews people are saying and quote:

"These are airMAX ONLY, they aren't standard 802.11ac wifi which means they only work with Ubiquiti airMAX 5ghz radios. The older NanoStation M5 allows you to turn off airMAX if needed. "

"The previous Loco devices allowed you to disable airMAX and connect to a standard AP, these do NOT. If you want to bridge from a standard AP order the Loco M5."

Sorry for my complete ignorance, what does this mean? And should I be concerned about all this?
