So getting fiber next month due to our telkom contract is ending, super excited cause I'm gatvol of capped data.

So my question, me and my son both game online, sometimes at the same time, my wife mostly just does normal phone stuff (Facebook, candy crush, etc.). Would a 20/10mb package work for us? We are working on a budget so I'm trying not to break bank here.

I've got the 25Mbp/s with Mind The Speed, 3 people gaming (2 PC's and 1 PS4) + 3 phones are permanently connected and there is no lag at all. Ping occasionally spikes by 20ms more or less when someone updates/downloads games. 20Mbp/s down will be 100% perfect.

20 down *should* be fine. But, opt for a 50 to be on the safe side, if the budget allows it.

You shouldn't have any issues at 20 but as all speeds are a "best effort", if you're only getting 15 and wifey is watching YouTube / Netflix on HD you may start running into issues, hence suggesting the 50 of the budget allows

Hey - I am certain a 20/10 package will work great for you. Battlefield 5 bandwidth requirements are only 512kbps while others suggest online FPS games might do better with 2-3Mbps but either way with 20/10 you're fully covered.

You might also be pleased to know that YouTube HD should even be fine as Google recommends 2.5Mbps sustained for a 720p stream and 5Mbps for a 1080p stream. Just remember that is per stream. Worst comes to the worst if you're hammering it a bit too much then you can upgrade in the future. I'd definitely start with 20Mbps and see how it goes but I'm sure you'll be super duper happy!

I hope the install is smooth going and enjoy! :)

Give the 20/10 a bash and if it doesn't meet your requirements, opt for the next level until you find what works for you.
I found my 20/20 to be more than enough for gaming and some streaming. With introduction of more devices, more streaming services I went for a 100/100 option. Recently my ISP gave me an upgrade to 200/200 for even less than what my 100/100 was costing.

Few years ago started with 20/20 fiber from afrihost (They recently made packages bit cheaper and also upgraded my speed to 50/50 at less cost usually paid for 20/20) we are 4 using this line so usually my pc and 2 phones, laptop and another 4 phones.
Laptop usually streams netflix and such and I usually stream youtube stuff on my phone.

When streaming netflix and such I usually do not see that affected my ping in games but watch out for Torrents and especially blizzard launcher that hogs all the internet for itself, torrents not so much but usually can not do anything when down loading form blizzard launcher other platforms like steam or epic game launcher usually not so intensive on the network.

So in short 20/10 line should be just fine just watch out for things like blizzard launcher and you should be fine imo.

You dont enter into a contract with fibre, so start small, can always upgrade if needed and downgrade again. so much more flexible.

But get someone with good support, thus avoid Supersonic. They have no idea how to manage accounts.

Most home fiber is uncapped. Am I wrong?

Look this is not comprehensive. You location will determine which is best.

The online gaming servers are mostly in europe and very dependent on ping (latency)

Based on test to uk and europe

Latency (see below)
top

Liquid telecom best (multi route, online test dashboard)
Telkom openserv (if you are in central jhb, home support is horrible)

inconsistent
frogfoot
afrihost *
vuma
metrofibre (stay away - home support is very bad)
bitco

20/10 should be fine for you

Questions

1. where are you located
2. whats the budget
3. what do you do besides gaming ? netflix, online live meetings

Thanks for all the advice guys/gals, we'll try out the 20 for a couple of months then see how it goes

I use Cool Ideas uncapped unshaped no limits you can't even see how much data you used on their website lol.I get about 155 ms ping to EU servers from Western Cape,Worcester. No problems think i have been with them for a year.Enjoy the fibre :)
