You'll need some python experience. This is more of a diy then a plug and play..
 
Bump. You could make some schweet Christmas tree lights with this, or a glass topped table or display.

You wouldn't be able to control it through the ASUS / MSI etc programs, it runs it's own code, but I believe once coded it should be able to keep running the code even when the USB is disconnected. Sample code is available on the website.

Any USB port or header could work as long as you had the right cable connector. The one it comes with is a 2.0 header and that arduino/printer plug on the other side. You can use a printer cable if you want to program it, but that wouldn't suit my build
