I've been toying with the idea of getting a full size SUV for a while now.
I was originally looking at a Land Rover Discovery 4, but lately I've been leaning towards the Ford Everest.

My main worry with the Disco is maintenance and running costs (Land Rover isn't exactly known for reliability).
Been doing a lot of digging and the Ford Everest keeps coming up with no serious problems and apparently servicing isn't a nightmare on them either.
Specifically looking at a diesel model.

Spending between R150 000 - R300 000.

Any other suv's or double cab bakkies that you guys would recommend.
Please no Audi, BMW or Mercedes.

I've got a friend with a Disco 3 TDV6 which currently has a broken crank, as in the crank split in two. The motor failed some time before, a new crank, rods and pistons were purchased from the dealership, motor was rebuilt and not even 1000km down the road the crank split in two even though all bearing clearances were correct when the rod caps were pulled and checked. Weird.

Basically, nah for the disco unless it's an HSE.

Edit- just saw no BMW. oh well

Went through this 1.5 years ago too, tested pretty much all and it came down to the BMW X3 2.0D which for me won hands down, it was more budget though.

I've had 3 friends move over from a Toyota Fortuner, Ford Ranger and an Audi A3 TDI (Not really comparable) and all love them!

Yes they lose value but so does any premium vehicle.

We have done 90% of our mileage towing 2 bikes on not so great roads and its been effortless and very reliable. however we have maintained it well

At your budget I'm assuming you're looking at probably a 2012 - 2018 or thereabouts? Correct?
Having had a Ranger 2.2 Diesel I will say that they're pretty reliable. Not too heavy on juice either. It's the exact same engine used in both the Everest and the Ranger from my understanding.
I don't recall which year exactly the whole facelift era on the Everests came about - but the 2012 to 2015-ish models were sinfully fugly IMO - the 2016 models onwards look good (to me anyway - i realize it's all subjective)
On your upper budget you should be able to get a pretty good deal on a 2017/2018 and maybe up (if you find a desperate enough seller :) ) model with decent mileage and service history I reckon.

A dealer did tell me once on the diesel engines the turbos were something to watch out for. I never had any issues and I tend to take everything a dealer says with a grain of salt.

Turbo failure due to failure of the Intercooler(plastic end tanks)on the Ranger is very common.

When I say turbo failure, I mean exploded to pieces that it requires a new unit.

I have an Everest and have had one for almost 2 years now... best car I have ever purchased and I have been through most. The new bi turbo 2.0lt is amazing....

2 of my friends both have X3's and while they're great, they're just too small for my liking and again future maintenance and parts can be scary (I've had issues with BMW's before xD)

I'm specifically looking at the 3.0 TDCi on if I pick up an older one.
If I spring for a newer model I'll definitely be looking at the Bi turbo ones.
I've not found any horror stories about them, I also know an engineer that works for Ford SA and he also reckons they're great.

Mmmm I've not seen any of the Everest owners complain about this, but I'll bring this up with my mate when I chat to him.

Any issues at all? Any bad experiences with the dealer ect?

I use Fury Ford Fourways, i know most of the guys there. I have had no problem with their service. My wife owns the new Kuga which she got from them too. No complaints from my side at all.

Now, I don't know if it is an optional extra or what, but I have seen a new Everest without grab handles for the back passengers. Something very small and so insignificant, but it would annoy me when I want to hang something in the back of my car.

Everest, Ford, kuga experience. Hell no. Never again will I buy a Ford. That, and the Everest was a disappointment, heard so much nice things about the car, when I finally got into it, I was not impressed at all.

Got myself a v8 Disco 4, 3 years down the road, no issues. Then again, a petrol, so the only issue on the 4x4 forums is the fuel consumption.

Also looked at a fortuner, but not in the mood to drive a tractor all day and the petrol was upwards of R700k with a R2k monthly insurance premium, so I passed on that.

That being said, if the car was not a success it won't be on the market.

So go and test drive it, might just be for you. You might love it, you might hate it. But for a car you can read reviews and look at specs, but a drive in a car is sometime personal taste.

So go and book a test drive.

Ps - I still have my kuga and won't sell it, I love the drive in the car, even though ford sucks.

Mrrm. subbing to this as well though the price range is probably a lot higher than we're looking for now. Wife is very keen on the EcoSport but eeeeeeeehhhhhh

Disco and BMW Xdrive rates about a -2/10 (Excluding the quality of the driving experience)
Its not if it will have an expensive break down its when.

Go for the ford hands down.
Ive had to open up a 2.2 gearbox to do cuff bearings and a few other stuff.
Had to do turbos and head gasket.
Still worth it.
