I remember recently advising someone to buy something on Amazon and them saying "Without a warranty?" (or something like that). Up until recently I never really worried about warranties because the stuff I had bought had always worked just fine... until this month.

So I thought I'd share my story with you...

I bought myself an Asus X570 TUF + Wifi motherboard at far lower than RSA prices (even after shipping and import taxes) but I have never installed a mobo before so I took it to Computer Corporation to swap out my motherboards. The guy took the mobo out of the static bag, cleared the residual thermal paste found inside the CPU socket, unscrewed and flipped the CPU fan brackets around so they actually face the right way around for the fan to connect to it, pointed out all the places where he could see screws were already used on the motherboard, highlighted the place where you can clearly see a GPU had been pressed up against the board.... then he installed it, found it wasn't posting at all and then wrote me a report listing all the stuff he found that proved Amazon had sent me a used and defective motherboard.

So I contacted Amazon, told them this via a chat window and arranged for a replacement. They said I had to send the original back to them (had to be in their possession within 31 days from the date on which return was arranged) or else I would have to pay for the replacement board also. I pointed out how expensive shipping is from RSA to the USA and that I didn't think it fair that I had to pay to return the broken, used item they sent me. They agreed and footed the return bill in addition to sending me a replacement. No replacement charge, no shipping, no import duties. Nothing out of my pocket at all.

They sent me a link from where I could print off the return waybills for DHL as well as the purchase invoice and said they don't even need me to send them the report from Computer Connection since what I have already written in the chat window is recorded and is all they needed. Couldn't be simpler!

Then came the problem...

We had to call DHL so many times over so many days and they STILL had no idea what a "collection" meant. They had all manner of questions and stories and [insert lots of headaches here]. Eventually I chatted with Amazon support again and said to them "I am having a lot of hassle trying to get DHL to collect the parcel and they are wasting my 31 day deadline. Can you PLEASE speak to them from your end and see if you can get this sorted out? Even though you already gave me the return waybill and the return has already been arranged, they can't do the collection without ME knowing YOUR account number with THEM, apparently. I contacted you before, you gave it to me already, I gave it to them already and they are still not sure how to come collect a parcel. Can you please help?"

While I was asking the support agent for help I had to ask him "Could you please stay on the chat for a few minutes? DHL is outside delivering the replacement motherboard you sent me. We can continue to arrange the collection when I get back". Two days later DHL finally collected the parcel (no, they didn't collect it during the delivery. That would have been too easy) and a week later it arrived at Amazon and I received an email telling me the return is complete.

TL;DR version...
I bought a brand new item but they sent me a broken, used item instead...
They paid the shipping to get the replacement to me as well as the return shipping for the broken one...
Getting a replacement from the USA was literally faster than getting the broken one shipped from inside town to the edge of town via DHL!
I literally had the replacement mobo from the USA installed and up and running inside my box before my defective board was even collected for return!

So, to anyone worrying about warranty issues from items bought on Amazon I have only one thing to tell you:
Customer support in the USA is nothing at all like customer support in RSA! When I told them how locally I would most likely still be listening to elevator music, waiting for someone to take my call while they have already arranged to pay for 2 items to be shipped on their dime from two countries and how every time I contact them for anything I am left amazed at their level of customer support, the guy just said to me:
"It is our duty to keep our customers happy"

When was the last time someone in RSA said THAT to you? So how does THAT make you feel about international warranties vs local warranties?
Me? I will buy from WootWare for convenience sake but when buying expensive items I would gladly buy from Amazon with zero fear!

p.s. I ordered the item from Amazon the day after I placed an order with WootWare for an item they had on sale.
Expected delivery date from USA: 15 December
Expected shipping date from Woot: 6 January

I love me my Amazon! :D

Which shipping option do you choose when buying from Amazon USA?
There's like a standard and a faster option.

I think standard is Aramex and the faster one is UPS. I am assuming OPs was express with those times...

lol yeah Aramex would have been more fun than DHL.

It would be unfair to compare any of the local e-commerce retailers to Amazon but I highly doubt anyone of them would send you a used item when you purchased a new one.

I wouldn't consider this a warranty issue, more of a DOA or out of box failure. After those 30 days, you'd probably be on your own unless it was an Amazon product, I believe the UK Amazon doesn't make you deal with the manufacturer directly unlike the US.
Also international warranty in terms of the product would be determined by the manufacturer.

That said I haven't had any issue with the local retailers like Takealot, Loot, NGR, Esquire etc. but for example if I had an issue with my AirPods and Takealot said take it to the iStore for a warranty claim because it isn't their problem, I'd be really annoyed.

Amazon used to have 3 shipping options but nowadays the super cheap option I used to use is sleeping with the Dodos
Now that I am paying the more expensive shipping cost, that little bit more is totally worth it. It's like R200 or R300 extra to receive the thing almost over the weekend. My Quest arrived in like 4 days (over a weekend no less).

Definitely worth it to spend the extra few Rands :)

I even messaged the live chat once saying I want to support Amazon, but the shipping price made it a bit expensive, close to local pricing, they then offered me free shipping to South Africa (apart from the duties)

As long as the SA Post Office isn't used, I'm fine to wait for some items.

SA Post Office... I spit on it's grave! :(
Useless as they are, why do we even still HAVE a postal service? They should just rename it "SASA Collection Point" and be done with it

If you have watched or heard Jeff B speak about Amazon, it’s always been about customer service. He is obsessed about it, and it shows when you look at his bank balance.

I decided to model my entire company around a single quote from Richard Branson:
Train your people well enough that they could go anywhere but threat them well enough that they won't want to go anywhere

This results in staff who are competent building up your company reputation and thus putting more money in your own pocket. That is why I am offering free coffee to coders in all my job listings 😜

Treat your people well, treat your customers well, your business will be better of for it! This is why I support Woot and Amazon so extensively. They have always treated me well!

I just HAVE to add to Amazon's reputation here. I mean, this absolutely WARRANTS their respect and a bolster to their reputation

I bought something a while back, I honestly can't remember what. About a year later I get an email from Amazon telling me that import duties has been reduced so they are issuing me with a refund on that import duties deposit I made... and so they refunded me $0.02!

Last month I received my Oculus Quest 2 and some Fresnel lenses... Today I receive an email telling me import duties have been reduced and I am owed a refund... So for the Quest they refund me $0.23 and on the Fresnel lenses $0.01.

I mean, c'mon.... When you read their FAQ they say they guestimate the import duties (since no courier company will even ATTEMPT to tell you what customs will charge you for your items) and if they guess too low they will eat the cost but if they guess too high they will refund you... and in this case the import duties were REDUCED after the transaction concluded and yet they still refunded me the single cent they feel they overcharged me...

Respect!

Exact same experience and the exact same refund amount on my Quest 2 :D

I fear everything now :cry:

that "Win10 key writing to BIOS" thread just had to remind me of the "The world is a lie" thread where I learned that I was wiping my ass the wrong way and now this added fear :cry:

I just can't take it any more

and to boot, find out this morning that receptionist's sil tested positive for COVID, sooooo.....

It helps if you have the financial muscle like they do to eat costs, also the lawsuit culture in the usa is strong so there is incentive to keep the customer happy to avoid lawsuits, whereas here you will be selling your house for lawyer fees before you even get to court, assuming you can wait on the backlog (the pro/cons for easy lawsuits being different debatable matter).

I've never spoken against Amazon in my life. I've had 2 warranty issues that I sorted out like instantly, I sommer used CourierIT back in the day to ship it to them without hassle.

I always use them to cross reference prices in our country before buying a item. Heck just a month ago I almost brought in a Samsung Evo Plus 970 1tb for R2300. But I thought to myself why do I need another? I'm not a hoarder so a 1tb NVME is all I need, hence another would be a waste of cash.

Bought a few items on black Friday from Amazon and they were delivered in 6 days amazing service. Best business quote I ever heard was a ceo and financial officer arguing about employees. Ceo wanted to pay for employees master degrees / additional courses. CFO said what happens if we train them and they leave?CEO replied what if we don't and they stay? Think most companies in SA have the ootlook of the CFO

Slightly off topic, but is there a way to calculate taxes and duties ? I want to buy Unifi gear and the US is still cheapest.

This is why Amazon is so awesome.... Nowhere else gives you an estimate of duties payable because they say they just don't know. Call FedEx or DHL directly and ask them and they will tell you "Contact customs in your own country on your own. Do your own research"

In contrast, with Amazon, just add your stuff to your cart, go to checkout and right before you place the order they show you the shipping, taxes and import duties, all neatly separated for easy viewing.

you are correct, wow, never noticed that before. item = $420, Shipping $65, Import Duties $70, and its still R1000 cheaper than buying here. In actual fact, you can get the estimated costs before you even add to cart. just by selecting the 'details" link under the price.

Not just that - but if their estimate is wrong and it costs more they absorb that extra costs, if their estimate is higher they reimburse you the difference.

ONLY issue with Amazon is that some of their listings don't ship to SA which pisses me off.

@Mclaren Sounds about right :)

@Qui_Illustrati
What is even more frustrating is when they list it DOES ship to here but then you wait a day, go to buy and then that supplier no longer has stock and the ones that still HAVE stock, THEY don't ship to here. Ughghg. Then, just to add insult to injury... 2 days after you buy local you see the item is now available to South Africa again. ARGH!

I bought my Oculus Rift via Amazon but they claimed the Rift S doesn't ship to here... so I got it via Amazon Japan and a week later Amazon.com offers shipping to here 🤦‍♀️ At least mine got packed, shipped and was already on the airplane 30 minutes before the USA was even allowed to start selling it 🤣 lol

But yeah, some stuff seem to never ship to here and that is annoying. I was looking at buying a very small resin printer the other day, for example... The green one doesn't ship to here because the 2.5 Kg weight of the item exceeds the max weight limit the staff are allowed to handle at the drop point. The same thing, same weight, $10 more and in orange... yeah that is just fine🤦‍♀️ ...cause it is supplied by another shop. Sigh.

Stuff like that is a tad annoying, yes! 😒

Last year i had the same circumstance of needing to send an item back to Amazon...

ordered a bunch of stuff.. one of them a phone cover.

The pic showed a redmi 6 cover (with fingerprint scanner cutout)... they delivered a 6a cover (no cutout)

They gave me an option for dhl drop off.. and according to dhl, i could drop off at any postnet.
Postnet gave me the finger and said i must drop it off in Pta CBD (or any big dhl branch)

Dropped it off there with all the paperwork, no issues...

Return shipping covered by amazon, since the product isn't what was described

Got my refund in a few days
~~~~
then this week i returned a laptop keyboard which didn't work... This time if i chose the return reason as "I don't need this anymore", i would have to pay $25 to send it back.
If i chose "Item does not work", then Amazon covered the return shipping. This time they gave me the option for DHL Pickup.
After getting the invoice, waybill and customs form, they told me to schedule the pickup with DHL. It was a hassle free online process, where i enter the waybill number and confirm the address on DHLs side...
My parcel isn't even yet in Vegas, but Amazon already refunded me.
In my case PostNet was the weak link also. Well, DHL also, TBH.
Amazon told me to arrange with DHL, DHL didn't have a clue what was going on but told me to take it to PostNet. After a couple of days of struggling with DHL we finally ended up at PostNet where the manager himself said to us "Yes, we do this all the time. Leave it with me".
Then the new motherboard arrived and the day after we got a call from PostNet asking "When are you going to arrange the pickup?"
Got back onto Amazon chat and told them how useless DHL and PostNet is. They said to arrange the pickup online rather than over the phone. This took minutes and from there everything went smooth as silk...
Moral of the story: Don't fear Amazon's returns policy or buying from them but make sure to log your returns online, not via the phone. It seems DHL staff know how to process their completed forms but don't understand English even a bit. Trust in Amazon, do NOT trust in DHL phone support... or PostNet :p
Got a friend to buy a Surface Laptop Go from Amazon instead of incredible connection as a price difference of R 11K vs R 15K for his chosen model. This thread helped me convince him that he wont be stuck with laptop without a warranty.
Just a quick question as well.
Do you guys buy from Amazon UK or Amazon US or other Amazon branches? I find for the few items I have bought Amazon UK is the cheaper after adding in shipping. The items seem to be cheaper on Amazon US but after shipping Amazon UK is cheaper overall. However I have only bought single items at a time. Is Amazon US cheaper for Multiple items?
I never thought about trying Amazon UK before since US was so cheap. Thanks for the tip. I tend to shop between USA and Japan, personally. Usually only when I want items the USA won't ship here but (very seldom) the Japan price beats the US price. So far that only happened once but it was on a R16k 3D printer I ended up not getting. For the most part USA prices have been hard to beat in my experience... so thanks again for the UK tip. Will try that out one of these days.
