I've been quite happy living under my ADSL rock for the last who-knows-how-long but of late I've been finding the speeds to be slow enough that it's becoming an issue. So I'd like to move over to fibre as our area is covered and I'm pretty sure a couple of residents in the complex already have fibre installed.

I'd like to remain with Afrihost as I've had good service from them over the years will do so unless there's a really compelling reason to switch.

I have some noob questions though.

Firstly, when installing the fibre line will they completely remove the copper line?

If the answer to the above is yes, then what becomes of the geographic phone number? How do I keep my number without the copper line? Would I need to port it over to Telkom's LTE option or something? I'd imagine I should be able to run the phone on fibre from a speeds perspective. I've heard horror stories about trying to cancel lines/services with Telkom and I really don't want to be double-paying for any period of time!

If the copper line remains then I guess it's pretty simple. I cancel my DSL line rental from Telkom, cancel my DSL contract at Afrihost and simply switch to the Afrihost Fibre package.

Help me out here folks.

First question is which fibre network is it? Openserve, Vumatel, Octotel, etc?

Firstly, when installing the fibre line will they completely remove the copper line?

Generally they won't touch the existing installed cables, they install new fibre, new box etc

You can either keep the phone with Telkom and cancel ADSL ONLY or migrate to VoIP, plenty of good VoIP operators that can keep your number.

Afrihost is good, Cool Ideas, Web Squad, are also good.

Thanks for the reply.

Vumatel seem to be the main players in my area. I've seen Openserve vans around too.

Cool - so I'm happy to can the DSL with Telkom; just worried that they won't action the cancellation and continue billing me until I die.

So seems this is easy enough.

Logged a request for fibre through Afrihost's clientzone and by all accounts I should be up and running on Fibre before the end of next week.

At the same time I submitted a cancellation for my DSL line. In 60 days - with a lot of luck - I should be down to just a voice line dependency on Telkom.

Just when I thought I was in the clear...

Not only did Telkom cancel my DSL service but they went a step further in great customer service by cancelling my entire phone line as well!

Well, guess I don't need them then :)

Classic telkom, and yes - you can expect to be billed well past your death.
You can get a telephone via fibre as well, similar to copper line/dsl setups.

Fibre is a no-brainer, so is moving away from telkom if you have the option.

And we've decided to try living life without our landline.

So far, so good. Might even use the extra bucks saved from not having to pay Telkom to bump up my line speed.

But first, I'll give the billing system some time to realise that they've cancelled my line.
