Hi all,

can someone educate me as to why the mac address used by my router results in the internet either working or not working.

My configuration:

VUMA ONT --> ASUS RT-AC68U router --> various devices (wired / wireless).
Package: Afrihost 100Mbps+ Vuma Aerial Pure Fibre

The router has a clone mac address feature. if I clone any of my mac addresses for example the router wireless mac address or any of my devices the internet works across all devices. However if I use the lan mac address of my router or don't specify a mac address to clone then the internet stops working after applying the change on the router.

Thought this might be the ISP blocking that particular mac address but support has indicated they don't do that nor can they tell me why this is happening, a line reset was also tried but that didn't resolve the issue either.

Any help would be appreciated.

Don't quote me on this, but you can't have 2 ports with the same address on the same device? If you clone the router's LAN MAC, it won't be able to route...

Have you tried a factory reset of the router?

Disclaimer: I did not RTFM.

Well there was an unintended factory reset just now, my hammer hit the wrong setting. There were other factory resets / powering off devices for 20mins etc while on a call with support resetting the line, trying the default / my device mac addresses etc.

Based on your reply + more 'research' ASUS share the mac address between the LAN & WAN. So I'm taking that as the why.

Thanks for helping @Wiℤard, stay safe.
