Already the Merc / Lulu fans are crying for Max to be stripped of his 2021 title.
Going to be interesting to see what the FIA does net moving forward.
As a Max & RB fan, I'm following this closely on Reddit.
I feel it depends on the severity of the offence in every situation. You speed in the pits by 0.01 km/h, you get fined €100 - not a safety risk, but you breached the rules. You speed by 5km/h - major safety risk and you'll get a much harsher fine/penalty. You cut a corner, 5 second time penalty, but you cause a collision and you get a 10 second time penalty.
Same needs to apply here with the budget caps, if the FIA wants to be consistent.
I have 2 questions regarding this breach of the budget caps:
- Did the extra spend go towards car development or any performance related advantages?
- Did the extra spend go towards staff or unforseen circumstances (as rumoured currently)?
If car development or any performance advantages were gained by the breach of costs, I will lower my head and accept that Max is not the 2021 and 2022 champ.
If the extra costs was towards staff or unforseen circumstances, I would expect a financial fine or something like that, but not the championship.
Merc has spent crazy amounts on budget over the last decade. It is clear that when the budget caps started, they immediately felt it and were ultimately beaten by RB and Ferrari. So Merc and Lewis fans should really shut the hell up. They're just salty at this stage.
