Cheers

Yes, but it is quite a risk. Exercise the same caution as you would on here (homework, research, etc) and look for options that has different couriers available. Some of the defaults use USPS and then that gets relayed to our local Post Office, which needless to say is an utter fuckup.

Ordered a motherboard a few years back and received it very late only after arguing with the Post Office for 15mins to make them look for the parcel. Also looked like they played soccer with the box.

With regards to shipping, as the fine individual above mentioned, do NOT let them ship the item here via USPS and SAPO, you might never see your item! If they can ship using courier service, that is a different story. For peace of mind, use Scotts Shipping Services - @ScottulusMaximus or Aramex Global Shopper / MyUS.

Thanks guys. How did customs work? Same as with new stuff from amazon, etc?

I bought a Mobo from Spain for my i7-930 quite a while ago.
It took a while to come through and the seller forgot to send the IO shield.
Was packaged decently.
I messaged him and he sent the IO shield seperately.

I guess because it was a used item I didn't have to pay anything extra in terms of customs.
With SAPO's current situation I would personally not try it again.

Exponentially slower. Seems like using a chaperone like Scott or Amazon speeds things up quite a bit. IIRC my package spent a few weeks in the ether that is customs. They eventually released it with like a R200-something "charge".

When I've brought in items, they can sit in customs for quite a while (I have had an item held for 1 day and on another occasion for about 3 weeks).

If there is anything extra to pay (I've only had to pay duties once for some reason - probably because the stuff I've brought in is mostly second hand), you don't deal with customs directly- the courier company will send you an invoice with the amount to be paid and get it cleared through.

I had Scott bring in a sound addon thingy for some ASUS laptops sourced 2nd-hand from Ebay. Went just fine but I know it can go very wrong.

Bought quite a few things from ebay in the past. Usually gets to SA quite fast (within 2 weeks) but then gets stuck at customs. My longest wait so far was about 4 months.
Ebay does have very good buyer protection. I believe you get up to 2 full refunds per year with almost no questions asked. Ebay refunds you directly and they take the matter further with the seller.

eBay is great and buyer protection is even better, as it gives you the assurance you won’t get messed around.
Just use a forwarding service for the USA as shipping is the main issue

This is what I do. Only had one issue of non-delivery to date, and I was refunded in full. Just remember that by using a US forwarding address, you pay around a 15% premium in US tax (based on NY tax rate), and then SARS import costs on top of that.

Which forwarding service do you use? I've used aramex global shopper before.

I have a parcel leaving next week

Only problem if customs pick up that it’s used goods, is you might need an ITAC permit, which is just a money making scheme and a pain.
From experience I prefer used goods because you know they work, if new items arrived, they could be doa and the return is a nightmare

Do you only use ebay?

I do a lot of purchasing in the USA.
But eBay is best for variety.

Anything in particular you looking for ?

I'd be quite surprised if a lot of sellers will ship to SA unless using eBay's international shipping service.

A lot of them won’t and that the reason for using the forwarding service in the USA.

If they do ship international, they’ll use usps, and that get handled by Sapo, and all the best with that arriving
