Hi all!

Figured I'd post about my ventures into getting my hands on a Geely E2 here.

Long story short, I'm still waiting to hear back about when I can expect to take delivery of mine. I am expecting in the next 3-4 weeks, but given how infrequently my expectations align with reality, that may not materialise.

What I can't understand is - why is Geely SA seemingly only delivering 14 orders every two weeks to dealerships, when they just bought in a shipment of 1000 and only 600 of those were on backorder for people like myself? Where have the other 400 gone?

My personal life and current work environment is also currently falling apart, so getting the E2 is basically the only thing that I have to look forward to at the moment.

@EinaMySny Any confirmed date on when you'll be picking yours up?
 
@Kromas has himself a BYD and says its fantastic as another option instead of the Geely

I did look into the BYD, but they gave me a lousy trade in value and the E2 has a quoted 125km range more than the base spec Dolphin Surf (which is what I'd be looking at price-wise).

The whole exercise is a money saving one, really

Are you going EV fully? Not even maybe a PHEV or Hybrid?

Yeah full EV. The cheapest new PHEV that I'd consider would be the BYD Atto 2, but the instalment on that versus the E2 would completely erase the savings that I'd otherwise gain from charging it.

Worked out that even with the recent electricity increase I can charge my E2 for the month's worth of driving for around R500, currently spending around 2k on fuel p/m
 
Maybe the 1 000 Geely vehicles was a range of them and not specific to the E2 model. Just a thought, not sure how the other Geely vehicles have been selling.

Jetour has also got an insane backlog, could only sell just over 2 000 last month alone and there are still people waiting for them.

Yeah fair point, I was told the 1000 would just be E2s (600 to clear the backlog, another 400 to distribute among dealers), maybe I was fed incorrect info though
 
The salesman I'm dealing with has complained about inaccurate info coming from head office, so it could also just be a case of borked telephone
 
If I may ask, did you arrange finance through a bank or through the dealership? Which offers were the best?
 
I've been arranging finance through a dealership - when I started the process with Geely Northcliff (they later messed me around in a big way, which was why I walked) the best rate they could get for me (allegedly) at the time was prime linked. I tried applying through Wesbank myself but at the time the car was so new that it wasn't on their database, so I couldn't source my own quote.

I haven't done the F&I process with Geely Menlyn yet - they're hesitant to start that process until my exact E2 is on the dealership floor

On edit: The best offer at the time was through Geely Financial Services (AKA Wesbank)
 
Think they're artifically driving demand, can't expect me to believe the Chinese can't produce them fast enough

I dunno man, they sold over 600k of them in China last year. If they were artificially driving demand surely I could walk into a Geely showroom today and get one the same day?

Apparently they only brought in around 300 in the initial batch to SA

So take 500 prepay orders, bring in 600 and when 1000 people don't get one there's enough demand to send other 3 ships this time with 5000


I can be completey wrong but its a valid tactic

Leme edit here for a quick comment, I have in the past grossley underestimated the demand for luxury cars from stupid people so there's a fair chance not enough of these are coming purely due to the demand from people who will default in 3 months. Great news for Geely,BYD, jetour and the rest of the gang

I hear you.

RE your edit: I think in this case the demand (if it is real) is likely because it's the first time that an EV has been "affordable" enough - okay, 340k is still a lot of money, but it is cheaper than the top spec Vivo - to the general public that people like me will be saving overall on monthly running costs because charging is still that much cheaper than refuelling my car, although the capital cost of the vehicle is higher than the one that I currently have

Hey! I am getting mine Wednesday, paid the full deposit today. Car is already at the dealer they busy with pdi and all that jazz.

Edit: I was told it is not a 1000 that came in, the first order was 1000 but only 200 have arrived so far and that is what was allocated across all dealers

Another edit: Spoke to another owner who got one on the first batch and he said the car is giving him much more range than quoted. He is achieving almost 400km with 100% city driving and on long range drives highway he got around 300km at 120km/h, thats great, I was planning on getting arounf 275km on highway and 325km in the city, 400km city only would be amazing

Dang, in that case, I really can't predict when I'll be getting mine, although allegedly the backorders would all be fulfilled by the end of July (but again, whether that is true or not, who knows)

That's pretty damn impressive IMO, especially because manufacturers usually tend to overstate how much range their EVs get on a charge. Also nice to know what kind of range I'd get if I decided to take a drive to PE or something

Let him make sure the distance is accurate.

I know of a instance where the dealer bragged about the good consumption of their vehicles. They jippo'ed the diff ratio on the ecu, as a result you'd drive 2000km jhb-CPT with very good fuel consumption if you calculated using the 2000km indicated instead of the actual 1400km distance.

I will do a through review on Carb as soon as I have the vehicle.

While this Hilux looks intriguing the numbers don’t look great. You get two range standards on EV vehicles. NEDC and WLTP, NEDC is an old standard they use coming from the 1970s, these lab test give very optimistic and always 100% inaccurate ranges for EV vehicles. WLTP is a much newer standard which normaly focuses real world range and is normally out around 10% either way depending on your driving style, your communte type like city or highway and your topography of the area.

The link you have says the NEDC of the Hilux is around 300km on a 59kw battery. That means the WLTP on the Hilux would be around 225km on a 59kw battery, that is horrible. It is probably due to the weight of the vehicle. But it would not really be saving you a lot.

For instance the Geely E2 has a 39.8kw battery and has a NEDC range of around 400km and a WLTP of 325km.

Got confirmation today from the DP that I will be getting mine on Monday.
 
If you get 400km, I would be impressed. What’s the battery percentage at the end of this 400km?
Dude must be driving downhill only, no more than 30km/h and no AC. :unsure:

Some of those okes are probably ex Kenyan boda boda riders. They'd load that car on the back of the bike and deliver it to the destination no problem .
