Hi bikers.

Can anyone give any feedback on how the quality and reliability of Ducati bikes are? I was thinking of replacing my BMW R1200GS with a Ducati Multistrada 1260 Enduro.

Its main selling points for me are:

1. It’s a very tall bike and has a 890mm high seat as an option. (I am just under 2m tall so every bit helps reduce knee bend cramps)

2. It has 15000km service intervals that would allow me to always service in December and not random times during the year. (I use the bike daily and get very negative when I have to drive a car and sit in traffic and the fact that they are confident enough to have the longer service interval tells me they are confident in the engine’s reliability)

3. That sweet sweet power.

4. I think it looks great and I love all the gadgets and electronics.

5. I feel it’s a better package than the 1250GSA and it costs less. So better value.

Would love to hear some thoughts?

Heyo

I've looked into getting a Ducati for some of the same reasons. I was nearly on the verge of buying a Monster 1200.

The one thing that has stopped me is the 30 000 km service. You pay over R200k for a new motorcycle then you pay equivalent to a small delivery bike for the Major service. When speaking to a Ducati Mechanic I found out that the costs are about R12-R15K for the service depending on which Ducati is being serviced.

Regarding reliability, I have not heard much actually. If you read some of the forums out there they seem to be quite reliable in the recent years.

People love the multistrada, those who buy it tend to never stray to something else.

That's just madness. There is already bearly any benifit to buying a new bike as nobody offers a service plan or anything other than a warranty. I will probably end up supporting Fire It Up cause all their used bikes come with a warranty and a service plan.

I'm going to throw my two cents into here.
Their service plan isn't all that and a bag of potato chips, Many people have complained that they get their bikes back damaged or scratched. Then fire it up claim that is how they received the bike. They don't have a workshop on site, they send it to some other place.
Their sales is amazing, You rock up there, in 10 minutes if you have the cash, or finance is approved, you are sorted. Top notch. Almost bought a second hand Panigale from them.

If you're looking at a Ducati then I would seriously suggest going to a actual Ducati Dealer. They are actually a lot friendlier and helpful than you'd might expect.

Point: Don't rely on that "service plan" that fire it up provide. it's way too backyard for my liking. Maybe buy the bike from them and take it Ducati for the services. I highly doubt the valve service will be included in the "service" Plan either.

You make a good point. I still add average service cost to the price of the bike to look at the total cost of ownership and those kind of service costs make the ducati very expensive. Maybe I will just ride the old gixer for a year longer.

Have a look at the way ducati engines differ to normal ones and then you will see where that price comes from

I know it was a bitch to do back in the day but I was under the impression that it was far easier to do nowadays.

A hospital stay... Wrote off a mini Cooper with my GS. Did my first front flip and landed on the cars roof. So waiting for insurance

Yeah I am fine. Had a hematoma on my left elbow. Cracked bone in my right hand and a bruised kidney. The kidney landed me in hospital 4 days after the crash as it was not releasing the toxins due to being a bit swollen and bruised from the impact

Ayy been there! Glad you were able to walk away bud.

Insurance going to make your mind up for you. Enjoy the Ducati. ;)

I would but my wife says I have exhausted all my luck so she is pushing for me to get a car. Will see how she feels in the new year. I am looking longingly at that multistrada

Hehe.

Yea... Shame :p
My wife found out a bit of a brutal way from me that I wouldn't give up riding.
Anywho, I hope you still get to ride a bike. No car can replace the experience.

Yeah Gonna get a bike too but she just does not want me commuting everyday

Yeah... sometimes in life things change... I used to commute rain, sun, wind, hail, cold... 80km one way (sometimes 120km one way)... Later I went to the track and enjoyed it a LOT... The road became not enough reward for too much risk for me... So now I ride track exclusively.
