Hi,

So a lot of graphics cards have a zero RPM fan mode where the fans will remain off until the GPU hits around 50-60c.

Do you use this zero RPM mode in idle ? Or do you set a custom fan mode so that you always have the fan spinning at a low RPM during idle ?

Vote in the poll or post here.

I prefer to keep them running constantly at a near inaudible level with no ramp up. This is where CLC comes in clutch.

Another question, but to the guys running custom fan curves in Afterburner/similar tools.

Can you still set a custom fan curve that uses zero RPM at idle ?
Or do you have to stay with the default curve for fan-stop zero RPM ?

My old GB 1080 G1 Gaming made this really annoying creaking noise each time the fans spun up, which would happen every 2 or so minutes at idle. So I set a custom curve keep the fans just under audible levels at idle.

Now with my new card I noticed that PCH and NVMe temps at idle run cooler if the card's fans stay on. So I use the same principle - test to see at which level the fans become audible, then set the curve so that they idle at 5% below the audible speed.

Yes and no.

I use the zero RPM mode but I have a custom curve set to start the fans at around 40 degrees as opposed to 55 that is the default on my card. That way it starts the fans almost immediately after a game is started.

First thing I do when I get a new card is open afterburner, play with OC, then leave it with a medium OC for 24/7 operation and forget about it. Fan always on, I always set a custom curve, around 30% at minimum which is below 40 degrees.

Oooh ooh, what about, what power management mode do you run (not sure what the AMD equivalent is). Until recently I used "Prefer maxmimum performance" which is retarded. Idle at 44 degrees for no reason, with fans obviously ramping up to compensate. Now its at 30 and 0% drop in performance, and fans are dead silent (y)

I use the Idle cause i have 2 case fans right below the GPU so there is no real heat build up on my card dont see why they have to run.

Ok. So. What setting do you have it on now? 🙃

Haha, I meant to add that. I tested 'Adapative' and 'Optimal' and didnt notice a difference, though adaptive would sometimes spike the clocks more. So sticking with Optimal for now

I noticed that sometimes you'll get weird frametime spikes or lag if you leave it on the other modes that ramps between 2D/3D and whenever there's a troubleshooting guide, one of the first few options is to set it to Prefer Maximum Performance so I figured I'd just have it set it to that all the time.

I use Prefer Maximum Performance. With 35% fan speed the GPU fan noise was nowhere near noticeable above my case fans and the temps were around 40c on my 1080Ti.

I normally leave settings at their default levels unless forced to do otherwise. My new GPU is also set to 0 until it reaches 40 or so then gradually bumps up to 100% at 70 or 80 (I forget which).

So I decided to play a few matches of Rogue Company and after about 8 matches I stopped playing, no problems.
I opened Unity and left it open for nearly 2 days, no problems.
I opened Unreal Engine 4 and within 30 minutes I recieved a popup warning me that my GPU is running a bit hot and that I should check my fan speeds and/or circulation. This scared the bajezuz out of me!

So I had a look and my GPU was at 68 degrees. the fans weren't even blowing at 100% yet and it was complaining already about being too hot at 68 degrees. I have 3x 140mm fans sucking cold air in, a massive CPU fan and then one fan to suck the hot air out. This has never caused any problems with an overheating GPU before so to see this within 3 days of inserting this new card, yeah, scared the bejezus out of me....

So I modded the fan speeds to start up SOONER (but still use 0 rpm) and faster over a shorter temerature distance... then I opened my case to give it all the bloody air it wants! ...and considering my temp still runs at an average 56 with the occasional spike up to the low 60s, I have been to afraid to run UE4 till this very day.... 🥶

Never had a problem running my fans at 0 RPM but now, now I am starting to wonder if maybe I should keep it at a constant 30% minimum...
