Disney+ service

Thanks, I was waiting for this

finally.. .tried to sign up a few months ago and it was just like 'fuck your paypal, we only accept american money'

You still can’t access without vpn or dns, and I don’t think you can sign up without a US credit card. Just interesting to see that I think we are finally on their rollout roadmap!

Signed up through the app, my Apple account is US based.

You don’t need a US credit card, my Capitec card(PayPal) worked.
The subscription pricing in-app is based on the account region so I paid in $.
You need a VPN to do anything, I’m not sure if there is a catalog difference between the US and UK region yet.

Thanks for cleaning some details up!

More of my 2c, in my brief time I couldn’t see a difference in content between the two regions.

If you’re only going to use this on your PC, don’t waste your time.
Same DRM issues as Netflix, so you’ll never get above 1280x720 so basically no 4K or HDR.
There is no app for PC to overcome this.

To access the debug menu
Crtl + Shift + “.”

So what device would you have to use to overcome the DRM issue and get 4K?

In short pointless to do it via VPN. Ewww 720p. ;)

Apple TV 4K would sort you out. Personally I’ve tried many years of I’ll fitting media solutions, htpc’s included. For me, Apple TV is the most fitting solution (with an iPhone to airplay to as well)

Can you install a VPN on it?

No, and Nord doesn't seem to support DNS. Express VPN however does, so I set up a DDNS for my Apple TV IP specifically, and it works. Not flawlessly as I have content drop-out from time to time but works for the most part

Thanks. I think I'll stick to the PC for now especially since I can get Netflix (and I think Amazon Prime too) in 4K HDR using Edge/the Windows Store app. Disney+ will hopefully eventually either support 4K with a Windows app or Edge, or they'll become officially available in SA so I can use my smart TV without needing a VPN. Or something like that lol

So this took some investigation, Disney did release a UWP/UAP sometime ago. v1.4.7.0 only for ‘Xbox’ then realised people were installing it on PC then decided to kill it.
The original installer is in the repo, ‘appx’ is basically a fancy zip file. It will install but you’ll be told it’s outdated and to update, you can’t update because they’ve actually locked it now to “Windows.Xbox”.

The latest version, v1.10.13.70 can be downloaded using
‘emsix’ are encrypted installers, but with some fancy Hex work, I managed to get some files out.

In the repo which you can download as a zip, inside the ‘Disney.37853FC22B2CE_1.10.13.70_x64__6rarf9sa4v8jt’ folder run
‘add-appxpackage -register .\AppxManifest.xml’ in Powershell to install the latest version.

It is very much Xbox focused so keyboard input works much better.
Alt + WinKey + Enter will make it go full screen.
Alt + Left/Right key to go back/forward.

The stream quality is much better than using a browser > 720p, my internet is wonkey atm so I haven’t hit 4K yet.

Just note the above isn’t guaranteed to work forever, I could see telemetry being sent back so won’t be long before they notice “Windows.Desktop” as the device in use.
The app internals also differ very much from Netflix in that there is no way to save content offline also no debug menu.
Although both implement HEVC, Netflix is ‘hosted’ compared to Disney+ which uses XAML for the UI.

I used DNS4me on a AppleTV 4K and both DisneyPlus and DiscoveryPlus work perfectly.

I used SmartDNS and Getflix in the past which worked with Netflix and Prime Video

Sorry I don't know what I'm looking at. Looks like the price went up? Does that affect existing subscriptions or do they stay at the original price for ever?

And also was it not available on 🍏 devices? It's been on Android since the start.
