It's here! Fresh Wort Kits, make your own beer at home! The original and first of it's kind in South Africa (really).

Typically selling for R650 for a basic kit, including everything you need to make your own beer. I also ship worldwide (yes, i've shipped internationally). Check out my website: www.lazyhunter.co.za.

OK I'll reveal a bit more. For now, there will be no alcohol sales from my brewery. It'll be homebrew kits with some accessories only. I have a few kits ready to go. I still have to decide on shipping but it'll probably be with @Dom for now. His prices are competitive and his service is nice and quick.

So what am I doing? First and foremost, something called Fresh Wort Kits. It's an all-in-one homebrew solution for the starter, the intermediate or the advanced brewer.

For total newbies or people who have never brewed before in their life, it allows you to brew your own beer at home, without the need of a fermenting vessel. Yes, a fermenting vessel is recommended for a lot of reasons, but with the kit you get a pressure release cap as well as a dose of yeast you can use to ferment 20 litres of beer in the comfort of your own home - right in the container the wort comes in!

For the intermediate brewers, it'll give a taste of true "all grain" beer, with no additives, preservatives, "cheating" sugars, etc. It's nothing but three ingredients - water, malted barley and hops. You can see what you can achieve with all-grain brewing, and see if you like it, before you spend money on brew pots and grain bags and malt and hops and whatnot. You pay slightly more for a Fresh Wort Kit than you would pay for your traditional "kit-and-kilo" brew kits, but the difference is noticeable. There's no lost hop aroma or flavour, there's no concentration, heating, boiling, dissolving or diluting of any kind. Also, the kit is still all-natural, with no dextrose or other cheap sugars added.

For the experienced brewers, it gives a quick and easy way to brew a good beer when you don't have the time for a full brew day. Break the seal, decant into your own fermenter, pitch your favourite style-specific yeast and enjoy a 2-minute brew day, knowing you're still busy fermenting a full all-grain brew. Convenience to the max.

I have two FKWs in stock right now. They are Vienna lager styled beers. Light and easy to drink, this 4.6% ABV (after you fermented it at home) is a refreshing beer with a good malty kick to it. At a nice 24 IBUs it is right up the alley of most people starting out with craft beers, or for people who don't like those bitter "hop bomb" IPAs or APAs or NEIPAs.

The kit includes a 20l jug of wort (this is what we call beer before yeast is added), although it typically contains a bit more than just 20l. It also includes a packet of brewer's yeast and a pressure cap. The process is really simple: You buy the kit, open the jug (break the seal), pitch in the yeast and cap it with the pressure cap. The yeast ferments the wort, and the pressure cap releases excess CO2 to ensure your jug doesn't explode. After 7 to 10 days your beer is ready to bottle!

Down the line I have Pale Ale kits (testing one recipe tomorrow) as well as other, more "advanced" brewing kits. Want your own truly all-grain whisky, or perhaps a custom designed craft Gin you made in the comfort of your own home? How about a nice, sweet, dark rum you can brag to your friends with?

WIll this be available should we go back to level 5. Please make it essential.
Yep, it'll be available. Because there's no alcohol in anything I sell (you put in the alcohol yourself when you ferment it at home), there are no legal restrictions around it. If I have to register for essential, I'll do so.

PS: The above also means that I don't need a liquor licence to sell this, and it also means that anyone can buy it, and anyone can move or ship it around no matter what the lockdown restriction levels are at.

EDIT: Oh yes, and if I haven't said it already - PM me if you want to place an order, or if you want a custom beer made for you. My kits sell at R600 as it is now, for the Vienna. I suspect the Pale Ale will sell at the same point, but if the malt plays along it'll come in a bit cheaper even. If you want a specific, specialty beer, just let me know. I've brewed Pilsners, different ales (including a great sweet chocolate milk stout) and even a very special Pumpkin Ale for friends recently and they're VERY happy with all the brews.

By the way, for you guys in CPT, I've spoken to @Dom and it seems like shipping the whole shebang down to Cape Town isn't as expensive as I'd thought. Yes, you're going to have to contact him for an official quote and order to pick up and ship to you, but it seems like around R170 is the price to ship it down. That ain't much for a 25kg package.

Damn, if you were selling ready-made after 17:00 on a Thursday...

Great idea you have, good luck and I hope you can make a success of it.
Though I'm more interested in the accessories you mentioned- care to elaborate on those?

I am a total noob with alcohol but could you use these kits to make cider?

For now, accessories related directly to the kits, like the cap spanners and so on. Later on I want to stock malt, hops, yeast and other brewing equipment. Also have a friend building malt mills and other cool stuff for brewing, so that's going onto my site as well.

Nope, unfortunately not. I can make up a cider kit for you, but it's going to cost a pretty penny. Cider is made from fruit juice, and getting a good source of juice (or concentrate) that's got little to no preservatives is a pain in the ass in SA. Like I said, if you want to I can take a look at it for you, but it's probably going to be more expensive than just buying a good cider in store.

Best try out a kit or three for yourself to see if you can get it down. And perhaps get his favourite beer style and let me do a custom recipe just for him :p

You got a still? Because if my plans work out, that's all you'll need. I'll provide the yeast, the fermentable grain sugar solution as well as the toasted oak (american or french), ready to make whisky! Rum's a bit easier, although I'm not 100% sure yet how I'll do the sugar wash...

EDIT: Also, guys, I've now officially got kits in stock. I have changed my recipe a bit to allow for a lot more aroma/flavour from the hops to shine, so if you are interested, PM me for a kit! I've got enough malt to make a few more Vienna Lager styled beers, and I have plenty of malt for some regular blonde ales (probably the best "beginner" craft beers you can make). Pickup can be arranged in Pretoria, or I can deliver as well for a small fee (just to cover fuel). Shipping elsewhere is going to have to be arranged by you through @Dom for now, but I'll include shipping on my site in the future once I have a shipping account of my own!

Nope, thought you'd maybe stock stills, even the T500 copper condenser on a 30/50L beer keg will do, I'm still waiting on my kegs, I might have a line on some but the lockdown is making it difficult to get (have a few friends that work at SAB) once restaurants can serve alcohol again, their keg side will open, giving them access to it, the kegs they said they'll be able to get will be slightly damaged on the sides, with dents, hopefully they can get it for real cheap for me (seeing as I work on their cars lol)

Dented/decommissioned kegs should be tossed for REALLY cheap. You can get decent working kegs for a few hundred bucks if you shop around.

Also, bump. I have kits guys, time to order!

You about to be sold out, if not already [emoji2]

@Toxxyc Will you also be selling recipe kits for those that already have all the kit? Also I might have to get some bottles & caps also possibly a hydrometer?

Ladies and gentlemen,

As you can imagine, after the announcement on Sunday evening I have been quiet swamped. So busy in fact, I haven't even been on Carbonite until now. It's insane and I love it. I want you to know I have SOME stock and I'm trying my utmost to source more so that I can continue providing kits to all you guys. To answer some questions:

1. Yes, I am still selling. What I'm selling contains no alcohol and it 100% legal to sell.
2. Yes, there is a delay. Right now I've been making these kits by hand, one by one, on order. However, I'm busy working on a process to move production up to to kits in one go. I'm hoping I'll get there by early or middle next week.
3. @stoefnick yes, I'm actually selling exactly that. If you have a brew kit, or one you bought during lockdown, my "kit" can be used just as a "refill" for the kit you bought. Just empty the container into your fermenter, dunk in the yeast and you're good to go, the rest is the same as all other kits.

Regarding accessories like bottles and caps and hydrometers - I'm really sorry guys. I want to start up a real store with a ton of accessories but prices have SOARED. Yes, I can sell you an airlock with grommet for R100 because that's what some places are selling them for, but I'm not "some places". A year ago airlocks with grommets ran in the range of R20, and I can't see myself just selling them at those increased prices for now. If the ban continues though and this is the "new normal", I'll look into that again.
