Hello
I believe there are some car mechanics on forum worth their salt so I thought I’d ask before taking the car in.
So my wife’s car has this knocking noise it makes when you change gears and if you slow down quickly. It only makes the noise at speeds below 80 and when changing between 1st-2nd and 3rd. Seems to happen when the car jerks but doesn’t happen if you brake suddenly...any thought on what this might be?

Most likely engine mounting.
What vehicle is it?
Age?
Mileage?

Send a voice note demonstrating in details the sound the vehicle is making

Fairly simple vehicle at least, at a wild guess, without hearing the noise I'd suggest an engine mount and then suspension. Get a reputable workshop to give you a quote on it.

My money is on the lower control arm bushings, but could be engine mounts or top shock mounts. To see if youre engine mounts are toast, open your bonnet, start the car and let someone engage the clutch like to pull away and see if the motor tilts alot forward or backward.

To test the lower control arm bushes, jack up the car, lock the steering and pull on the wheel to 9 o'Clock and 3 o'Clock and check if there is movement where the control arm bolts to the sub frame.

Lastly to check top shock mounts,(do this after checking control arms lol) grab the wheel and try to pick/lift it up and check/feel for excessive play at the top of the shock.

Not to familiar with the i10 but just something you can check.

Engine mount

Thanks for the replies.

Are there any other details you can give us?

The RPM of the car when the problems arise? If you disengage the clutch whilst moving and decelerating, do the problems stop?

Keep the bonnet open and rev the car at stand still, does the engine move and twist?

If you apply brakes, does the noise increase with now hard you push the brake?

I’d really ask a petrol head to drive it though.

I drove an Audi A3 and it felt like shit. It was supposed to go in for a simple service but I could feel the chassis flexing when I accelerated hard.

Almost all of the engine mounts were worn due to age. There were several other problems with the car but that was the biggie.

I had a car, which after some abuse had one rubber bushing on the control arm wear out. The knocking came when you would press or release the accelerator, one knock each time, because of the control arm moving about against itself. The wheel also moved in/out slightly when going around a corner accelerating/braking. I got a new bushing pressed in to solve the problem.

No one mentioned the exhaust flex coupler problem on these cars :p
@Ran you can bring the car to me for diagnostic :)
