Buying pc parts off amazon any of you guys purchased form them? How was the purchase, I’ve been looking around and I’ll probably be buying my pcu, monitor and case from evetech because they have the best prices and the shipping for those are insane from amazon,

Amazon is not local and you will import. That is the reason for the high shipping cost. Note you may not have warrantee on parts purchased from Amazon unless you ship it back.

Didn't you make a post about this already ?

I can understand using Amazon to buy high end parts or hard to get parts but nothing on your list is high end or hard to get.
if you shopped wisely locally , you could get all that or very comparable for a similar price.
Warranties are a big deal and for system like this I don't see the point in getting from overseas and having a very vague warranty that will cost you plenty to send back.
As others have said your final total could be a lot more as well. Doesn't make sense in my opinion.

I bought from Amazon recently. Yes given it wasn't major parts for pc. But it arrived well packaged and secure. Item fully working. So you definitely don't need to stress about it. They ship with Aramex

That's not why he wants to buy from Amazon . He is under the impression it's cheaper and I would argue that, for what he has listed.
Of course Amazon are going to ship properly and professionally.
Anyway give us an update when the deed is done and total costs .

Ah right okay. Thought he wanted insight on the experience. But I would agree with you. Buying pc parts from them other than their insane black friday deals. There is no point really.

Not Amazon, but looked at getting something when my in-laws are here in Jan (from EU). Totalled, the 4 items are just R600 cheaper, any shipping would completely eradicate savings compared to local prices.

Unless the items in question goes on sale, I am buying local.

I wonder how chaotic Black Friday will be on Amazon ? Maybe that's the question you should ask @MajorTom from people who have bought from them on Black Friday. If you could actually get the order processed on that day then it might very well make sense to buy from them but not at the prices you have in your list.

PS: Just make one thread in future @MajorTom

I haven't bought any actual PC parts from amazon, but I did get a mouse pad and based on that here's just some advice:
  • Check the warranty, most of them dont support the product if you buy from say the US and ship it here - for me this is a problem with major components
  • The price including shipping and customs etc seems to generally be similar to what you get here (go to proceed to checkout and see the total costs). Would be better if you have someone going to the US that can bring it in for you.
  • Amazon's currency conversion is a bit higher than usual to cover their bases - depending on your bank, it might be a tad cheaper to pay in dollars and let your bank do the conversion.
  • There is a limit of 3 imports per person per year into SA, otherwise you need an importers licence (apparently this is Free and easy to apply for - see @DannyBoyOPC comment below). So just be careful it doesnt get stuck at customs
  • Their shipping was super quick - it was planned for 12 days, came in 6.

Good luck! Please update the thread with your experience if you do buy stuff of amazon.

It is completely free to apply for a importers code. Just have to complete 2 forms, provide a few other papers like proof of residence and tax compliance etc.. and then go to the SARS Customs Office and hand in the paper work.

Once that is complete you wait about 10 days or so and you should receive notification of the completed application and get the importers code sent to you via email and post

Is an importers code only needed for items you plan to resell ??

I imported a lot this year and didn’t need to be registered and didn’t have any problems

U need a code to import anything that you want from overseas. Be it for resell or just for personal use.
The rule now states that 3 parcels or R50000 value per year. So yes you imported a lot and didnt get caught, however they will eventually catch up to you and impose a fine.

First time i think its R3000 fine and once flagged by SARS you going to have problems going forward with all parcels that come in.
- Like delays
- All parcels being opened and searched
- etc

It's fairly hit or miss on whether they ask you for one even over the three imports a year they ask for. I buy something from overseas seven or eight times a year and have never been asked for one
