Hello guys and girls.

Have a few questions please as i am building a rig soon.

1. Is there anywhere else in the US i can buy stuff except Amazon and NewEgg? I have someone coming down from New York in December who offered to bring down parts for me. Not massive parts, just mobo, CPU, cooler etc.

2. Graphics cards - GDDR5 vs GDDR6. Whats the diff? Is a 6GB GDDR6 card better than say a 8/11GB GDDR5 card? The board I am buying will support PCI-E 4.0 so I'd like to maximise that. It appears that only the 5700XT supports PCI-E 4? I dunno. Very confused with all this and browsing on this Celeron Laptop is, at best, slow. So filtering and checking and browsing are just not very quick right now.

3. Buying a x570 board, Perhaps an AMD 2700x and Corsair RGB Pro 16GB. Will upgrade to 32GB a bit later on. I see some people prefer 4 sticks of 8GB and some go 16GB x 2. Big difference? Also, I obviously want to get the highest mhz ram i can, but i am just way to much of a Corsair fanboy to stray onto other brands. So I am stuck at about 3200Mhz right now. Is that half decent for a build?

4. Warranty from said suppliers. If I need to return say a motherboard, Do I have to pay shipping both ways or can it be RMA'd locally somewhere?

5. Corsair PSU's .... What size will run a decent gfx card and some other normal things like hard drives etc? 850W enough? And then the RM/RMx/AX etc ones. The "i" ones are drawing my attention because you can monitor them, but is that really so important?

Thanks!

@Adrenalin

1) MicroCenter maybe, I know its very popular with Tech youtubers.

2) GDDR6 has faster transfer speeds and a slightly lower power draw compared to GDDR5. I would go with a 8GB/11GB GDDR5 over GDDR6 card, unless your looking at a 2070 maybe. Stay clear of the 5700 XT, way too many issues with temps and drivers. GamersNexus actually did a bunch of videos of all the issues.

3)4 sticks vs 2 sticks just depends on your board. If your board supports Dual Channel, then 2 x 16GB sticks is better, if it support Quad Channel then 4x4GB or 4x8GB is better. With Ryzen, you want the highest Mhz RAM possible, Corsair has kits of 16GB (2x8GB) at 4000Mhz (Evetech stocks them if i remember correctly)

4) This is one I'm not sure about, but i think you'd have to pay for the shipping since you bought it in another country and local Distributors won't honor the warranty (I think)

5) PC components don't draw that much juice anymore, you could get away with a good quality 650W easy

And then went ahead and made it their best overall GPU for 2019.

In short and simple if you want to save money one buys abroad depending on how bulk your purchase is the advantage of buying locally is greater to this extent, support our local guys and warranties are helped along faster even thou you would be paying a premium that's just how life works.

1. Microcenter is decent over 100 stores across the states
2. Shipping faulty items back is on you the consumer
3. I would personally buy a 2070/2080 as RTX is gaining popularity in a lot of instances -If within your means 2080ti super
4. 5700XT if it was so assumingly bad why is it selling so much besides the price point?

5700XT is fine. AMD ironed out all of the issues and if you get a non stock cooler edition, it’s great.

Thanks.

So why is the 5700xt so much cheaper than Nvidia cards?

And is pci-e 4 worth it?

Because Nvidia added ray-tracing and tons of performance to their cards and the 5700XT is aimed at giving good performance at 1440P with sheer grunt.

AMD hasn’t been focused on top tier cards and the speculation is that most people can’t afford a high end card, so why should AMD offer it?

If you want 4K gaming, you need more power than AMD offers.

PCI-4 isn’t worth it because it makes no difference to real world performance. Even a 4gb/s SSD loads games only a little bit faster than a regular NVMe drive.

Sweet.

Perhaps I should stipulate what I intend to do with this PC a bit.

Basically I enjoy games like Sniper Elite, COD, Need for speed etc. Maybe some Photoshop stuff from my camera.

Some of you would say it's overkill but I really have been wanting a PC forever and I want to build a good rig if I decide to buy a 4k monitor to watch movies on. I am not looking for 60fps at 4k gaming, that's not me.

I'll go 750W maybe, and look at 5700xts but I'll get the card in SA because of the warranty.

Well then your worries are solved :) ...

2x8gb is plenty for gaming. I don't know of any games that would use more. What are you planning to do with the PC?

Game a bit, Photoshop, movies, etc.

As mentioned, you guys will think it's overkill but I really want to build a decent PC then upgrade with the times. Haven't had a really decent PC in forever.

Just remember that AMD improved the IPC with ZEN 2 so if you want to game, rather get the 3000 series from AMD as it’ll be better for gaming overall.

If you wanted to run multiple virtual machines and handle big data sets, then a 2700X makes sense.

You don’t need to spend a fortune to get a decent PC, just choose your parts carefully.

My budget is being streched a bit if i go 3rd gen. The x570 board is a must I think. That's a chuck of change. Coupled with a 3rd gen 3600x that's quite a chunk of change!

You could look at the 3600/x with a good X470 board. X570 you only really need if you want pci gen 4.

Appears as though a B450 board will do me just great.
Don't need onboard wifi, don't need PCI-E 4.0, don't need 10GB LAN, don't need half the stuff the X470 or X570 boards offer.
Man, I really do procrastinate and look at every factor possible and by the time I'm done Black Friday specials are gone. Poof.

Exactly.

Don’t pay for things that you don’t need and don’t have a real world impact on your gaming experience.

Buildzoid said that his favourite B450 board was the MSI gaming Plus and I can see why. Not badly priced and full of nice features.

Got myself the MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC and really chuffed with the decision. Needed enough space for m.2's, the 6x fan headers, wifi and bluetooth with the type c.

x470 and x570 had no appeal to me and also seemed like the B450 MSI boards had the best temp management.

Buildzoid said that most of the Gigabyte boards have iffy voltage control, so I’m avoiding them for now.

Exactly. I watched a video from some build dude and it made sense what he was saying.
One of the key points is that no gfx card uses pci-e 4 or even maximum pci-e 3 as yet. Or very few like the 2080ti. So I didn't bother. Took a x470 board. 100 dollars. Falls within my budget, also has 2xm.2 etc. I am not overclocking or doing weird stuff so don't need anything more.

Edit : Yes, buildzoid

Guys can I ask opinions for one last thing please. Probably the most important thing on the list. The GPU.

The 1080Ti is really drawing my attention, the 11GB version. I can pick one up within my budget on carb.

The thing that isd distracting me is the AMD 5700XT and the AMD Vega.

My plan is to, as I said, play a bit of Sniper Elite, Need for Speed, Call of Duty, few war games, do a bit of photo editing etc.

Which one would you buy if it was your build?

Buy the cheapest - none of them have features that stand out per say.

Maybe the 1080ti because of the VRAM amount.

11gigs versus 8gigs and 8gigs.

Also, you can take a stock 5700 and unlock it to enable most of the features, making it a veritable XT. The problem is that you really need to get the 3rd party coolers to make it rock.

There isn’t a bad choice in there, it’s mostly price dependent.

Got the same board. It's great, and the wifi on it is great too. Only gripe is too few USB ports in the IO. For everything else it's perfect. Slap a 3950x in in like 6 years when they are cheap and you have a board that will go way longer than it should. AM4 is bliss.

I too am currently torn between the B450 Pro Gaming Carbon AC and Tomahawk MAX. I dig the WIFI/BT tho.
