So like most university students, I'm permanently broke but I have a somewhat decent PC that I use for work/gaming (R5 3600, RX580 8GB). I do however find myself in a position where I don't pay for electricity so I've been wanting to get into mining overnight with my PC but I have no idea how to make the most out of what I have. Tried Bitcoin on Nicehash for a bit, gave that up, then today I tried mining Eth using nanominer but I have no idea if it's worthwhile. Does anyone have any advice, or links to other *USEFUL* resources? Don't want to stress my system if it's not gonna yield any sort of useable return.

Best set and forget method with most profit is currently pool mining followed by nicehash, for pool mining i suggest flexpool but for set and forget use nicehash :D

Just use nicehash, remember to tweak the gpu for best results (low power consumption, higher hash rate)
I consider myself a bit of a tinkerer, so the tuning is why I initially wanted to try it out 😂 it's the everything else that's throwing me off. Is it feasible to just stick to Nicehash? I thought being rewarded in Ethereum would make more sense but maybe I'm mistaken?

You will probably be mining etherium on NiceHash or ravencoin or ergo but NiceHash just converts everything and pays you out in Bitcoin.

The only problem is that you will need to wait a while before you can get a payout with 1 gpu.

When I started off, I used NiceHash and then for a few months had half my cards on NiceHash and other half on Ethermine. I could not get any conclusive evidence that either was better. Some days NiceHash was higher while other days Ethermine came out tops. Eventually I just moved to Ethermine as with preferred payouts in etherium

I personally use Nicehash.
Set it and forget it.
If you're not paying for electricity, I would highly recommend mining.
At time of writing, according to whattomine.com, you will profit around $2,19 which is about R34 a day.
FYI, this is not financial advice.
Just something to consider.

In July 2020.....I started with a 1070.8gb & was paying for Electricity.

I've now got
6800xt n vega56 rx580 n 1660ti
From work money and mining profits this is all I have 145mhs

I direct mine to ethermine.
Using trex Nvidia n tearedminer for Amd

This sounds like a lot of things I've never heard of 🤣 I'll look into those, thanks

Pool mining sounds complicated, but I'll look into it thanks 👌
Pool mining is not difficult at all. I assume you mine in Windows? Using and setting up a miner, like T-rex is straightforward. If you want to mine ETH, I suggest to have it paid out in BTC, as the fees are much much lower!!

Look up The Hobbyist Miner in Youtube. He has a lot of RX580 gpus. For Windows related setups, look for Sebs Fintech Channel on youtube. He is the windows mining specialist!

If you have a Ryzen 5 CPU, that could also generate you a few bucks. You can look at CUDO Miner as well for set-and-forget options. In CUDO, you can also configure the miner that it does not use your PC resources while the PC is in use.

The end of the semester is getting a bit hectic, so I'm just gonna lock this for now and come back when I have more free time to tinker
