Long story short, went and looked at a second hand BMW M135i (2013 model) with a friend. Sell claimed the car does not have a service book. And that almost all BMW's do not.
Noob here so any comments? I thought all cars had service books?

All cars do. Considering it had a 5 year service plan, you would atleast be able to get the record from any BMW dealership with the VIN number of the vehicle.

Bmw services are recorded on the system under the motorplan(any bmw branch can pull this records), after that they keep a copy at the local branch where it was serviced. So it if is serviced at bmw, then you buy new book and just have it stamped again.

All cars come with service book.

Should have the book unless it was lost / stolen /damaged /intentionally not given as services were missed or not done by an approved company. But you can also take the vin number to BMW and have them check on the system for any records / comments etc.

Proof of service/invoices far outweigh a service book anyways. If they cant tell you which oil, and when it was replaced... walk away :D
"one owner, full service history" means jack shit nowadays.

Roll back the mileage, and lose the book and you have a bargain BWM for sale

Thats what a lot of places do....all bmw have no service books, what a crock of shit

Even the newer Mercedes don't have service books. It is recorded on system. This is how mine was done.

Audi as well. No service book but the owner can give them the VIN number and they email you a report of everything ever done to your car at the dealers.

You probably going to get to BMW with the VIN and discover on the system a list of parts ordered/fitted that could indicate that the car was in a accident or motor got damaged. Hence why the book is missing.

That makes no sense. If the motorplan was voided that would be a red flag.

Seller is a #$%%. 1 series & mini's are probably the most fault prone cars (in my limited car knowledge). Kind of not surprising as the target market generally won't be the hand-on-repair type & will just take it. If I recall on the global "lemon" list , BMW are constantly in the top 3-5, in most parts of the world. Also if she is paying lets say R100k, she should put R50k away for repairs / servicing etc. Once she gets to 25-30k of repairs, start looking to sell the car, thats my view anyway.

M135i is slightly different. As long as it’s serviced, should be a cracker of a car.

Put aside R12k odd for tyres, get the turbo serviced and auto box serviced as well.
R20k aside for problems and they should be smiling.

And all the above is because it’s a performance vehicle, not because the M135i’s have issues

Edit: And lots and lots of money for petrol

n54/n55 Engine has nothing but problems bud, I had the 335i. Piece of junk. Get a diesel 2011 model or newer if you want to drive a bmw. You won't need to set aside any cash.. they just keep going.

Different experiences then. Had it. Loved it. No issues and costs were similar to what I paid on my 86. Only car that’s less maintenance wise is my current which is a diesel.

Edit: Funny this thread shows up on BMWFanatics, so seems people really do have issues with the N55 platform.
At OP, please keep this in mind.
