Hi fellow BMW enthusiasts,

been getting jealous of my friends enjoying their 90s Bmws on weekends and was thinking of investing in a sorted 5 series with a straight 6 engine. Most likely going with the 528i.

any opinions on the E39?

I know you said straight 6 but I have to mention the M62B44 motor in the 540i is almost bullet proof.
Still mechanical, no vanos etc. 6-speed manual. Easy to upgrade and with some straight pipes sounds beastly.
Also more street cred than a 528i

Agree with this.

IMHO if you not getting a 540i or M5 you wasting your time, only problem 540i's are hard to find and M5 are expensive if you can find a clean one.

This. I've been looking for the right 540i as a toy for a year before giving up.

Been looking for a Jet black or any blue valiant.

Same sentiments as others have mentioned, E39 M5 or 540i. Those cars are fantastic just make sure you find one that has been well taken care of with full history.

Big difference in price though. Seems 528i can go from 55K to 100K for neat ones. M5 and 540i is a decent amount over that.

By “investing” i meant Spending 😂
Don’t care too much about depreciation, was just looking for opinions on the car itself, not whether M or 540i is better. I will be driving and enjoying the car, not keeping it in showroom condition.

Then our opinions shouldn't matter :)

More wanted to know how the car is reliability wise etc, if anyone owned that model before etc.

also looking at E36s

so far youtube has helped a lot on opinions and drove my friends E36 325i (amazing vehicle) but just wanted to share the Bmw love on the forum 👍

The M52 was a reliable engine, but like most in that era check the Vanos for issues.

E36 was always a good car in my books and the M3, well its just a legend car.

If you decide to go E36 (non M) please, no offence to others, do not make it look like an M. The mirrors and body kit; Keep it a clean 325i.

I bought a family members Z3 2.8i and I'm enjoying it to bits. The 6 cylinder is silky smooth and a real joy.
Money spend vs fun factor is a win/win.

Parts are aplenty and relatively cheap from my quick checks before buying.

I agree with this fully, why waste the money on flare to make it look like something it isn’t.

and besides a clean E36 325i is a beautiful vehicle as is

M62B44 has Nikasil sleeves, you must be mad to buy an old car with that...
I have rebuilt these, its POS

My word thats one botched up job on that 540.The only 540s that came in 6 speed, had a distinctive body kit and different wheels. They are quite rare. Someone done their own mod on that one.

Not a BMW fan boy but my bro had the e36 328i and that was a beast and also looked great, parts where kinda easily available and for the time he had it it was reliable and definity fun to drive.

That motor is smooth and there are some tweeks one can do to up the output

Had 2 x BMWs in my lifetime. Amazing drive! If you can find a reliable, well-priced workshop to assist with repairs, then you should be good. My E36 328i had that distinct BMW straight six sound, and that sound alone is worth every cent on petrol lol
