Good morning guys,

I need some help with a laptop for a buddy of mine. When you switch the laptop on, you get the POST screen along with Press F11 for this F12 for that, and Delete for BIOS. However that is as far as you can get. After that, an Enter Password screen appears that apparently was not set. Friend says he removed the hard drive to copy some stuff, put drive back in and when he powered it up, Enter Password has appeared.

I have tried leaving the laptop with battery and cmos battery out for extended period - has not helped. Whether hard drive is present or not, this Enter Password still persists.

Could anyone here possibly assist me with this?

Thank you

Any chance this is an ex-company Laptop?
If so, he will need to contact the System Admin of the company who owned the laptop previously.

Thanks Virus but it is a private laptop

I tried a bunch of tools on the same laptop model, and eventually just gave up...

As long as I could boot from a usb and reload the OS, I was happy.

I wish it were that easy, I cannot do anything. Laptop will not Boot, will not access BIOS. Basically I get POST screen and then Please Enter Password

Ah that's the boot bios password you somewhat fooked with that one if you don't know it. Ive heard on the Lenovo side i think you have to replace the laptops motherboard if that happens. I've never tried resetting bios for that one not sure if you can but might be mistaken.

Hoping one of our resident experts would be able to assist without going that far

Ok, from the prompt you get, are you sure it's not just asking for a new password to be set up? And I know this sounds silly, but if that is the case, what happens at that screen if you just kit ESC?
Also, if it actually has a password, and you put the wrong password 3 times, does it display a code?

Not a new password, I have tried quite a few - will not accept a thing. Once you have tried 3 times- "System halted, Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart" is message displayed

When you do this (removing battery & cmos) make sure to hold the laptop power button in for 20seconds to flush any residual power. Although the CMOS should be an independent power circuit try it anyway.

9/10 you will require a board replacement to remove the password as its written to the flash and no amount of resets will erase it.

Older HP's you can get rid of it with specialized USB boot software but you wont easily find this.

EEPROM chip on the mainboard has to be desoldered and the data in it manually edited using a program with a special tool to clear the password

there is a long shot, if the laptops pretty old this might work.

Try the below site and plug the laptops serial number into

BIOS Master Password Generator for Laptops

This is the lines I was thinking along, who offers that service though?

The solution should be simple.
Is the laptop new?
If yes, return.
If not, contact previous owner for password.
