Recently moved and it will be quite a while until I get around to running a LAN cable to my PC. Have to get landlord's permission and blah blah.

So I want to get a semi-decent wifi dongle/adapter for my PC. I have a cheap little d-link dongle that is giving me packet loss and averaging about 20mbps but my laptop, right next to my PC is getting the full 50mbps.

So clearly my little wifi dongle is letting me down, I have never looked into wifi stuffs so have no real knowledge at the moment.

Hi I can get you a TPLINK® 300Mbps Wireless N PCI Express Adapter, Qualcomm, 2.4GHz, 802.11b/g/n, 2 detachable antennas for R480

Forget to mention - I do have a PCI E slot available
So I would always recommend one with an external antenna - i.e. one that is connected with wires that you can put on top of your case or desk, not one with the antenna fixed to the adapter. This way your connection isn't obstructed by your case.

There used to be a Gigabyte model in your price range but it seems to be out of stock everywhere. The only one for less than around R 1k that I can find in five minutes of searching, is this one. @Dreamware Tech can maybe comment on its suitability for your needs but for me it seems to tick all the boxes.

Hi @Captain Tom and @goldfritter,

We think Goldfritter has the right idea here. Cutting down as much interference as possible is always the best method and you'll be surprised how much interference a PC case can cause, especially if it's plugged into the mobo I/O. Going with a PCIe adapter card such as the one you mentioned will give you the flexibility that comes with the antennas, plus better power delivery through the PCIe in comparison to a USB adapter.

If you need a hand with anything else we're always happy to help 🙂

Have a good one!
