I have a 2012 A4 TDI and it seems that its almost time to replace the brakes. I was told at the last service that I have about 15 percent life left and was given a quote of R8500.00
Can anyone advise of an alternative trustworthy place to buy the parts in Cape Town? Alternatively someone that will give me a honest quote?

Master parts in Cape Town.

Good mother.... I hope that quote includes lubricant...
Try the two places as mentioned by these gents above for the parts and have a friend do it for you - offer him (or her) a case of beer. Not a difficult job, just a dirty one.

Brakes are a universal component and you don't need anything specific from Audi or an Audi shop.

My go to is Goodhope Spares / Goeiehoop Onderdele in Brackenfell industria.

Cost me about R3500 for discs + pads all round and a fancy gedore wheel spanner and jack lift when I did my GTI. Your Audi shouldn't be much different in parts and if you aren't doing it yourself you don't need the tools.

*****

Also it's an absolute money making racket by dealerships. You can check these things yourself with a torch and without taking the wheel off. If you can see a groove on the pads then it still has some life left. Even if there is no groove it's not like brakes magically stop working instantly so the whole "safety risk" story is also nonsense. If it was mechanical pad wear "sensors" you'll hear a squeeling when they are truly done and if it's electronic you''ll have the light pop up on the dash.

Many times got told "you won't make it to the next service" and yet I put another 45,000km on the car before doing it myself.

Andy Supaquick or HiQ and the like should be able to quote you as well if you don't want to source parts yourself. Again I highly recommend HiQ in Brackenfell from personal experience. Wouldn't touch Supaquick in Durban Road ever again if you paid me.

Thanks guys. I will have a look at them tomorrow. Yeah Supaquick wouldn't trust them to do wheel alignment of a wheelbarrow. Idea is to buy the parts now and fit them when the warning lights go on...

Yes and no, Genuine audi products (plus dealer markups (of course) vs affordable alternatives.
Try to at least get a reputable brand like ATE [emoji1303]

There is no such thing as "genuine audi" when it comes to this stuff. They don't make brake components.

They literally use ATE or Bosch and Brembo on some sportier models.

However I do agree it's crazy to expect identical pricing from a dealership with a fancy shop front and who gives you courtesy cars etc when working on your vehicle...because that's really what you pay for.

But when they put markup on parts that just rubs me the wrong way. Sure charge crazy labour rates but the parts shouldn't be profiting.

By and large I also blame the modern day motorplan model for this. It's like Medical Aid in that way that it just pushed the price up for everyone and even when you want to go direct you still get the motorplan pricing.

Front Genuine Parts Brake Pads are $120 - So shouldn't be more than R1700 and I would expect even cheaper when not at retail direct from the dealer.

Rear pads should be even cheaper.

OP never specifies if the quote was R8500 for just pads or including discs as well.

I was quoted 3-4k per disc for my S3 about a year ago:ROFLMAO: Over 10k just to do the front discs and pads at Audi.
I just googled around and found the corresponding Ferodo part numbers which were compatible, ended up paying ~R900 per disc, and got Brembo pads; all from Midas. Total cost with labour from my tuner was under 3k.

Yes I know (wife and I both drive Audi), said it to make an example in this context.

I learned that ATE produces for a lot of car manufacturers and they slam their brand (and fee) on top of that, and also that most local dealerships will just replace it with the ATE branded products, but still charge "genuine audi" price. No shame. Hence I asked if they supply lubricant with the initial quote, cause you might as well just bend over when paying that fee, unless you are Pablo Escobar... (sorry been watching narcos recently)

Impressive pricing for Brembo pads that. They are usually pretty expensive even when bought directly.

I would think the S3 runs Brembo as OEM especially looking at the quoted pricing.

Nah you take your car to the dealership for the service book to it gets stamped. Do all the other stuff yourself or somewhere else. If it's an older car you plan to keep a while take it to a reputable specialist for everything because as the mileage goes up nobody cares who serviced it any more as long as it was a reputable shop and not a backyard oke.

When people say these cars are expensive to run it's purely because they go to the dealership.

100%
Please go and compare your Toyota (generally overpriced IMO), Ford or Opel and you'll be surprised how "cheap" your "small" car is compared to a "luxury" counterpart
