Description of Bad Deal:

Hey guys,
I recently traded my PS5 + Controller for @pennie so called "excellent", "very lekker performance" MSI lighting z RTX 2080ti + R1000. Shipping took quite abit for myself and his package (he booked shipping for myself and him) but not big issue. They guy seemed really genuine and pretty cool.

I received the GPU a couple days ago and I wanted the benchmarks to be run so I could sell the GPU to @affxct but understandable he was cautious with purchasing the card from me as he did not know the bechmarks on the card. I tried getting benchmarks from pennie whilst it was in transit to me but he did not provide me with any. My self and @Colonel Sanders linked up so he could run benchmarks on the GPU. If he found the GPU in good quality be interested in purchasing the GPU from me. I do not have Gaming PC at the moment hence why @Colonel Sanders ran benchmarks. The only time the GPU was opened up from the packaging Pennie had done was with Colonal Sanders, I had not opened up the GPU when the GPU was with me.

I expected the GPU to be in "excellent conditions" (as Pennie stated) but in all truth it was performing extremaly below average. I was really disappointed. It performed poorly in the tests. I'll come back to performance in a bit. The GPU was clearly opened up whilst in the hands of Pennie as in a photo pennie showed me before I received the card there was a screw poorly put on the back plate (I'll produce photos below). When the card was inspected screw sockets were damaged on the side. The LCD screen was producing a water mark or blob effect when off and on. There's was alot of dust and dirt found on the card which I can clearly see pennie did not clean up. There was a piece of plastic material Coming or falling off (it had to be superglued). Temps were running very poorly, the temps battled on 1080p CSGO and in general It ran hot in csgo... where most gpus fans won't even start spinning. It was 77c in csgo and fans were ramping 70. @Colonel Sanders suspects there is an issue regarding the thermals sector. Over clocking and tweaking was performed and there was only a **SLIGHT** increase in performance but still way below the average 2080ti performance or "excellent conditions". Benchmarks of the card will be provided below and it was just bad. If the card is in "excellent condition" why should It have to be tweaked it to get below average performance. Really unfortunate.

I requested a refund Pennie refused and till now has no explanation for performance or quality of this RTX 2080ti. Chats will be posted down below.

I really did not want to resort to the bad deals thread but I was given a gpu that performs poorly and I couldn't get a refund. Which I felt very unfair.

For reference on those Timespy scores, the GPU scores should be approximately 15K. So this is performing at 50-75%.

Good Afternoon,

Hope all is well.

I was in rush to send of card, but that's no excuse. I couldn't Find benchmarks on my phone, The guy I bought it from send me benchmarks, but I cleared the history. I asked UhhShayy if i can collect card and test it for myself but he said no he wants refund?

I will not give you back the card untill I receive the Playstation 5 back and if you manage to make a solution we can go on from there but I am very skeptical about doing anything further with you.

@pennie did you service the GPU at any point and what did you service it with? Sounds like core temps wants to run away and then throttling hard, usually that happens when thermal pads used for replacement is too thick and preventing the cooler from properly making contact with the GPU die

Hello,

I do indeed suspect there to be a thermal issue with the GPU. I have not and will not open the card up to repaste or check out the thermal pads unless @pennie allows me to. I would not like to be told that I have messed up the GPU because I have opened it up. I received the GPU sealed from @UhhShayy who did not open it since he received it from @pennie . I can do more tests if required. Just let me know

This is exactly what I thought hehe

Morning Voldo,

The previous owner said who he bought it from serviced it before selling it to him. The carb user i bought it from was running it for 1 year and said he didn't have any thermal issues. I had the card for 3 months and didn't have any problems.

The MSI afterburner image you posted shows power limit is set to 39% ?
Is it stuck like this or did you set this ? if so i found your problem

I would think this case is closed and no further action/discussion is required after post 7.

it's set to 39% so that fans don't ramp up to 100% while playing csgo. I don't need it higher than that to play CS

Hey, are you going to open the card and repaste and do so more tests?

1. First and most obvious issue observed by everyone is temps affecting boost. I checked the TIM and quite clearly no contact was being made. I left the pads as is.

2. The card had a random shut-down that I thought was indicative of a possible PCB issue.

3. Upon booting up the card is now stuck in LN2 mode with the BIOS on original. The card has apparently been on LN2 the whole time cause JD spotted the LN2 label on the bad deals pictures initially.

4. After further inspection there are a few screws loose and 1 missing. There is an air mark that appears on the GPU inside the LCD. I believe this was caused by the missing screws on the shroud over time. The mark only appears when the GPU is mounted normally. The mark reduces to no mark over time if the GPU is orientated how it would be if you were to mount it vertically in a case.

You can see below that after re-pasting the GPU it is performing a whole lot better.
This is on stock settings:
