Fuck Fortnite, I want a MC - SkyTree server...
But aparantly xbone version can't join Java MC servers...

Quite pissed at this moved company servers to Azure end of last year, would have loved to go with AWS

At AWS or at your company?

Stupid question, but how's the cost for AWS versus on-prem?

Massively complicated question, but if you take things like insurance (both hardware and business risk), security (both physical and cyber) and hardware degradation into account, I'd bank on AWS being significantly cheaper.
I've done an AWS Solutions Architect certification and the scalability is what amazed me. As soon as a product they offer stops making sense for a growing business, they have a well priced alternative to move to.

Yup fully agree. It helps business move away from a capex to opex expenditure model from a financial point of view. Scalability and High Availability are other important capabilities in the cloud which would cost alot to accomplish on prem.

If you're not careful you can easily spend more on Cloud Vs On Prem. Done properly massive savings. We recently did a large scale migration for a company and the savings were around 40%

We are currently running hybrid with essential servers hosted on Azure and non essential + AD on prem which is a bit more expensive. But well worth the expenses in terms of hardware degradation and scalability

Any real reason why you're keeping AD on Prem?

I love the game and it would be a lot more fun if we could play on our own servers

No offense but people really don't understand how small our user base is.

there have been arguments for years, for games like LoL etc to get local servers but it always comes down to user base and cost.

I wouldn't hold my breath for local game servers, i still don't see game companies investing that kind of money to host local servers for a tiny percentage of their users.

A little too late. The market that existed before COVID-19 had been swept up by Azure. I find Azure to be much slicker. Also Amazon 🤮

This. It's just not there compared to major markets. Even compared to Australia and Brazil. I think people also underestimate the sheer cost of game servers. From administrative to pure computational resources required, it's a money-pit if you're not making a sufficient return.

I am still a Junior, and to be completely honest I don't feel too comfortable moving everything as my senior was shown the boot, and now I am left to manage everything. So migrating little by little

We run some cloud servers on AWS, as well as some on Host Africa.
The Cpt AWS server is good news for us because recently some of our clients were complaining that their servers (hosted in Ireland) was becoming slow, which is most likely due to latency to the servers.

We are starting deployment of Cpt based servers in the week still :D

This is excellent news for this backwards country.

Going on site feels like it isn't worth it... Which is more likely to happen:
a) Your site fails as a result of power outage, crime, nature, loss of connectivity
b) A big data center falls over

DR is much easier with cloud based hosted environments. Connectivity should have failover etc...
If you host your own stuff you need to maintain, replace, upgrade and hire someone to tend your servers.

This is excellent news for this backwards country.

Why add the negative jab on the end? Why not just go with "This is excellent news?" like for realz... we ALL know that SA is backwards and stuff.
