Any suggestions for well mixed, good production quality, albums? Or singles, but I prefer albums.

Nine Inch Nails - The Downard Spiral

Trent is obviously a master of sound production in general, but also listened as a concept album (i.e. tells a story), probably one of the best.

Alt-J - An Awesome Wave

Similar to the above, there is a lot of interpretation to be had in this album. But in terms of pure sound (harmonics and everything else), just pure bliss.

John Butler - Ocean (the studio version on Youtube)

Not much can be said on this one. It has all the feels. Been listening to it (at least once a month) for the past few years.

Anything live from Sigur Ros, Florence + The Machine, Daughter. For easy listening go Bombay Bicycle Club / Two Door Cinema Club.
New Sam Fender ft Hilly Humberstone - Seventeen Going Under is epic.
For local, go Beatenberg (the full album, not the 94.7 'hits').
ForeignFox for epic Scottish folk.
Biff Clyro (particularly the first 3 albums) for hard Scottish Rock.

All of these I consider really well mixed/produced.

This dynamic range list has served me well. Generally an album that has good, preserved dynamic range is one that has been managed well from a sound production standpoint.

I’ve forgotten where they stand on the list but Eric Clapton’s Unplugged album and the live recording of Hotel California stand out as really good recordings to me.
Dark Side of the Moon and Division Bell are great too.

On the first page I saw Doves and Sisters of Mercy which have epic albums (Some Cities and Floodland, respectively). +1

Roger Waters’ Amused to Death might be worth looking into. And anything by Arcade Fire, and the Decemberists, come to think of it.

And another vote for Alt+J.

How do they calculate the DR? I picked one on random from the page with the highest and found myself listening to bird/nature sounds lol.

Then I checked an album that was suggested on another audiophile thread on a different forum, Mutemath - Vitals, and it seems to have quite a low DR number.

  • Beach House - Bloom
  • Daft Punk - Random Access Memories
  • Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
  • M83 - Hurry Up, We're Dreaming
  • LCD Soundsystem - american dream
  • The War on Drugs - Lost in the Dream
  • The Weeknd - Dawn FM
  • The xx - xx
  • Anything by The National (Aaron Dessner is a production wizard)

Love this thread!

I agree with everything @thecurto said - great suggestions there.
My additions:
  • Dirty Loops - Phoenix
  • Ryhe - Home
These two are all very VERY different albums(artists) but each carries its own weight when it comes to a great listening experience on a good system/headies.

Sophie Zelmani - Sunrise

Some of her other albums too, like Everywhere

I've been enjoying this for it's more mature lyrics and feeling, thank you

Great stuff. Try Eva Cassidy and Katie Melua as well, if you have not already. Amber Rubarth too

Foo Fighters & RHCP - especially Unlimited Love, basically uncompressed recordings & it's fucking fantastic.

Personal favourites from Unlimited Love:

Here Ever After
Great Apes
Whatchu Thinkin'

Beatles also have some fucken great recordings
Audioslave & Sound Garden can't go wrong with them either

Steely Dan is known for extreme perfectionism when it comes to the quality of their recordings. Gaucho is my particular favourite, but pretty much any of their albums is likely to fit the bill. They also don't use a lot of distortion and other effects that make it difficult to evaluate your kit.

If you are still looking for more there is a nice list in this discord server by GoldenSound. He does all kinds of DAC measurements and sound related stuff. Look for the channel named #goldens-music

@Bravick

If you can find a lossless version of this it's even more amazing

Trying apple music now for the lossless. So far the android app is better than the youtube music app on android

If anyone's looking for a giant blast of nostalgia, give this is a spin.

All the mmrs of Fall Out Boy circa 2005-07 just came flooding back

Bonus: Pause the video on the bookshelf and check out the book titles. Pure gold
