HI All,

I am new to Carbonite and was advised by a friend to start a thread here.
I bought an Asus laptop in Feb 2017 (at a price of R8177 incl vat). It had a Year warranty but recently just died. (Does not power on)
I took it to the supplier that I bought it from (No names mentioned) and they have given me a price for repair of R9210.29 (Over a R1000 more than the cost of the entire laptop)

The Model of laptop is Asus K541UA-GQ591T and the part number is 90NB0CF0-R05100 Main Board.

Does anyone know where I might be able to get this part at a cheaper rate?
I could probably fit it myself if need be.

I am guessing you tried all the tricks below first?

Remove battery and charger and hold on power button for 10 seconds

then with only the charger plugged in but no battery, hold on power button for 10 seconds

Remove RAM and then power on, it should fail post

check on ebay. Might be something on there.

Contact Mustek electronics or Rectron, they are repair agents for Asus too....assuming that that is not who you contacted in the first place 😳
Otherwise, contact your insurance and get it sorted through them. You should have cover for that.

I cannot go through insurance as the laptop was not as specified item :(

I tried removing battery, did the power thing. Problem with this laptop is that it is "Semi Sealed" unit. You have to go through the top base plate. Battery is internal too. I did manage to pop battery out and try the 10 second discharge trick. I think the ram is soldered onto the board (if it isn't, it is on the other side of the MOBO)
Laptop doesn't even get to a post. After pressing power button, the power light comes on, but no fans or display. So it could easily be a faulty MOBO

Damn....i would try them anyway. There is a thing called general cover which is normally around 15k to 20k. Nothing to lose i say.
GL man.

I took my Asus to Rectron and they wanted to replace the motherboard to start the process of troubleshooting which could lead to other parts being replaced after as well. The fact that they must import the parts from.Hollland,.the time delay of min 3 weeks and the price( cost > selling price) is sure to scare anyone away from purchasing an Asus machine again. Not a good experience from the the service agent as well. So overall not a good experience

Holy Crap...That is some scary shit right there....one of the biggest pc component suppliers in SA (Asus) and that is their setup....not good.
This is their direct number...Asus SA: 0861 278 772
See perhaps what they have to say regarding the issue.
By the way, what did Rectron want to charge you for the troubleshooting alone?

I've been working in the laptop warranty repair sector for over 4 years. The prices of motherboards generally exceeds the cost of the actual machine. Asus parts are an extreme pain in the ass also due the long wait for parts to come in, We've told clients it takes 3 months to get parts in at times. The spares for the laptop market is generally bad, especially for things a bit more on the high end. I can get you parts for an HP15 any day of the week due to its high sales volume though

I also may...just may have a motherboard for you @skinnerd123 (will need to confirm at work tomorrow) that we can sell for cheap price as it would be second hand so the lifespan would be unknown

In excess of R8000....and Asus knows about it. For them to see what else is wrong the motherboard must be changed first.

Can confirm companies do things like this where 'further fault may be found'. I personally find it to be a sign of poor quality technicians but it doesn't help that schematics for consumer grade boards is really hard to come by.

have you tried a proper electronic repair store?

it could be as simple as faulty resistor!
