So I currently have a Sony Xperia XZ2 and must upgrade in April. I try keep with the Sony range as everyone has a Samsung basically. It is also a fantastic phone for me, can't think of it giving me any issues. I know Sony are pulling out of SA, not sure when though and I haven't seen a new flagship phone advertised from them.

Any advice on what to get that might be similar to the quality of Sony? I basically do some Faceobook and Whatsapp on it. Don't really install a lot of junk on my phone.

I would love an Asus or Razer phone but that won't happen with MTN.

Qualify "must upgrade"? Because I also have the xz2 and its gonna be the last phone I use for a while. Your contract will go down by R400-500 a month if you let it roll over to the month to month basis. See no point in "must".

Sorry, not a must but I just like to get a new 1 then maybe sell old phone or give to someone in the family. Didn't actually know about the month to month part. I do enjoy the minutes and data I get as I call quite a bit. Does that not fall away?

I love the phone but for me the camera just doesn't seem up to standard as some other phones. Not sure if you noticed that as well maybe?

Hhmm. Ive always had the flagships Samsungs and those cameras were amazing. Then moved to their mid tier stuff and yusus the camera sucked. When I upgraded to the Xz2 it was like wolrds apart. Does the job :) not like im trying to film my life on camera. So for me its a little bit biased, liking the xz2 camera enough.

And no, the whole bill stays the same, just the handset/promo amount is now not part of your monthly. My wife has the 7edge and her contract went from 699 to 240 since the 24month contract expired and she gets exactly the same minutes/mb a month. That's our experience on mtn at least.

Wow thanks for that insight. Might consider just doing that then.

Ever since the Chinese phones have been so competitive, Samsung have stepped up their mid range phones. The M and A series now reflect that and they are actually great phones with less bloat because of the cleaner OneUI and with OneUI 2.0 now being released (Samsung's skin on top of Android).

All phones are basically the same quality, the more you pay the better they become. So if you get something like R5k+ you'll get fancy things like a glass back, metal frame, hole punch display, curved display etc.

Though try to look out for practical features such as dual SIM, 4000mAH+ battery and fast charging.

Also look at Chinese brands such as Xiaomi, Redmi, Oppo, OnePlus etc if you want good value non-contract phones.

What about Huawei? My whole family switched from Samsung and Sony to Huawei last year. Amazing phones definitely value for money.
