Hey all

So a while ago I ordered the Oculus Rift through Amazon.com and it cost me nearly half of what it costs locally. I eventually sold it to get some cash together for the Quest or Rift S and finally settled on the Rift S.... only for Amazon to say "Sorry, that doesn't ship to South Africa. You can buy the original Rift or the Quest but the Rift S doesn't ship to there"...

I asked Amazon.com why not and they gave me a non-sensical answer along the lines of "Due to warranty issues this is a restricted item that can't be sent to your country. I know you want to order this item so I am thrilled to tell you that if you have it delivered to a mail forwarding company THEY can ship it to your address! Here is a list of companies you can contact"

Instead I just went to Amazon.co.jp and pre-ordered it from there. No hassles. As an extra bonus, because of the time zone being so far ahead, my Rift got shipped from Japan on launch day... at 11PM on the night BEFORE launch day in the USA :p Amazon America says they can't ship it to me but by ordering it from Japan mine got shipped out before launch day in the USA! Loving it! :D

Unfortunately, shipping from Japan only gave me one option: Express delivery! ...which means it would most likely have cost me less to order from the USA if I could... :/
Anyway... It went from Yokohama to Tokyo to Hong Kong on the 21st and on the 22nd it reached Johannesburg and cleared customs. I am expecting delivery tomorrow even though they said to expect it by the 27th...

Total cost for the Rift S including express DHL delivery, import duties and taxes: R8100

Definitely FAR less than what it is gonna sell for locally and since Amazon.com won't ship to here, if anyone wants to buy a Rift S simply buy from Amazon Japan and land yourself a nice little bargain!

Delivered 3pm on 05/23/19 !

Damn thats pretty cool. I got my Rift end of last year and love it. Wish I knew about the S but I don't feel a need to upgrade it just yet :p

Hi Jansen, how are you enjoying your Rift S so far? Man I'm so disappointed that we can't buy the Rift S locally at a decent price. Naive old me thought that they'd be available in some tech stores at around R6000 and after waiting for many years I thought that I can finally afford to get into VR (after also upgrading my GPU). Guess I'm going to have to skip on this one too. ;')

@TA.Maximus I saw there is a Vive here on Carbonite selling for a round R6000. There are quite a few people who would argue Vive is better than the Rift. Guess it boils down to personal tase but, yeah, definitely keep your eyes peeled here on Carbonie. I think there was some Rifts on here for more or less that price also (not sure if they have already sold so just do a quick search to see! :) )

Good luck! :D

Are you enjoying your Rift S? I'm really thinking about getting one because I dont have any way to use vr with the lighthouses, so the Rift S is magical that all I need is the unit

The unit and a powerful enough PC. Difference between Rift S and Windows MR is just the software that you can run on it (Windows Home vs Oculus Home, Oculus avatars vs nothing, Steam only vs Steam and Oculus Store).

Yeah true, i couldn't download the oculus software that tests the PC out but i tried the steam one and it says I'm more than capable. i7 3770k, 1080Ti and 16gb RAM

Another thing I wanted to ask is, can you leave it plugged in all the time? Because obviously it's a bit mission to plug it in everytime. At least with my setup

Well...there are ways to get all of that working on MR devices.

Mine is plugged in all the time, yes. I hate messing around with cable behind my machine in it's dark corner so I just leave it plugged in. As long as you don't open anything that uses VR it does nothing.

@Qui_Illustrati
YOU can get Oculus avatars to load in Windows MR? :O :O
WOW! Cause that is by far the thing I love most about Oculus... Their Avatar system. If 1 million players play my game and 1 million look unique and I didn't have to lift a finger to make it happen. Considering the time and money it costs to make just one character (the one I am having made now has already taken 3 months so far and the end is still nowhere in sight), that is the coolest thing they could have done and almost makes me want t o make my games Oculus exclusive... but since that is just plain stupid I de-emphasize the importance of avatars in my projects...

If you can get Oculus avatars to work in Windows MR headsets please PM me the details. I would be very interested to learn your black magic ! :D

👍 Cool. they must have realized how stupid it was to deliver the other Oculus devices but not this one :D
High time they came around! :) Well, if you get one, enjoy! :D

If you close the oculus SW, it shuts off the screens in the headset. So my my CV1 I leave it plugged in, by only launch the Oculus SW when the headset is in use.

What sucks is that I'm in Durban and I can't test this thing before getting one. Theres no demo units anywhere

Now thats wat u call a bottleneck lmao 35% of it to be precise

Not quite sure what you mean. It runs like a dream

When u have a super powerfull gpu and not an as good cpu you get a bottleneck so you cant use 35%of your gpu

Well I do realise it is a 7yr old CPU, it still has a lot of power and is doing bloody well all things considered, sure I get a bottleneck in BFV but I'm still averaging around 100fps which is fine by me
