Anybody tried the checkers gaming monitor ?

Went to Checkers, Menlyn earlier and picked up one of those dual monitor arms. Already set up and I must say, they feel pretty decent IMO.

Two qwerks though:

The first would be the small plastic piece that links the VESA plate on the monitor side, to the arm. It looks cheap and could possibly break easily. Everything else feels like a decent sturdy metal, apart from this.

The second is that It is struggling to hold my Dell 27" on the tilt. In the manual they indicate that you just need to tighten a screw for a heavier monitor, but I'm not sure I can go any further without stripping the thing.

On the bright side, I really like the cable trays which it has.

Also, Checkers, Menlyn has about 10ish 24" monitors and about 3x 27" this morning. One thing i noticed is that they had one of each on display, and the 24" colors look a lot better, than the 27" which was very washed out and bland. Took it upon myself to make sure the settings were the same, which they were. I'm assuming here its either different panels, or perhaps one big panel lottery.

I doubt because the scaling is too large -- check with other sub 30" UHD users how abysmally small the text is on UHD (3840x2160) at small screen sizes

Most likely just an error
Ok cool I read you but even after restarting PC twice it`s at 3840x2160 with 200% zoom so text not that small & even games run at this resolution, so now I`m cumfused

My bad

Windows automatically did the DPI scaling for you?

Holy crap in that case I need 2 of these. UHD 120Hz under R10000? Bargain for days

Mind you, games won't run well with an RX580

I had the Vega 64 Special, 2700X -- that was fine but anything less and UHD gaming is not gonna be smooth

It's most likely gpu downscaling from 2160p. You need hdmi 2.1 to have 4k120.

Im contemplating getting over myself, if I don't like it I guess I can return it

Got myself the 27 inch today:
PROS:
- noticed that the viewing angles are similar to my samsung 32'' curved monitor , which is pretty cool!
- the 27'' has such thin bezels ! looks sweet! its the tied for the slimmest bezels of any monitor ive owned thus far
- AMD freesync is connected and working
- Its R2999 provided you have the Checkers savings card
- 144hz working perfectly - no jitter whatsoever with Freesync on

CONS:
- this panel doesnt get as bright as other display's ive owned
- the stand included is not the best its thin and you cant adjust it.
- most of the sales-persons (atleast where i purchased from ) dont know this is 144hz. Dont be surprised to be told theres no 144hz displays in stock only to turn the corner and find a mountain of these.
- by default and without tinkering , this has a faded look
- the dynamic range between blacks and whites isnt as good as my previous dell non-gaming 27inch

QUIRKS:
- I was worried about the "faded" appearance a user above complained about - out of the box, yes, the gamma seems a bit off- playing with the settings does improve it like with any other monitor - decreasing the black level also gets this in check. but still , I constantly find myself increasing contrast and brightness for certain games then having to decrease it for normal computer tasks
- the salesman confirmed this has a 1 year guarantee - how these screens hold up in the mid to long run is yet to be seen.
- I noticed the display getting hot the first time i plugged it in, doesnt seem to be doing that anymore .
- it could just be my OCD but the "X" logo on the front doesnt seem completely straight , im not sure if the logo is just supposed to be like that or if they embossed them a little crooked .

Overall really happy with purchase, ive been comparing this to my current and previous gaming monitors (which cost 2x the price) and this monitor will do the job and punches WAY above its price.

Whatever happened, happened🤷‍♂️. I tested AC Odyssey, Mortal Kombat XL & NFS Heat at 3840x2160 seems to work, but overall satisfied this far with the little 24" 144hz cause no more bad ghosting YIPPEE👏as what happened on Philips 243V.
With regards to returns I asked the sales guy and he said if for what ever reason I`m not happy with the panel I can return it for full refund as long as it`s within 7 day period.

Fuck it. Throwing both of mine in the dustbin. Just saw this.

But for real, anybody know if it will be warranty void if I remove the stickers?

I was fiddling around & low & behold my resolution went to 3840 x 2160 at 120hz

does this mean I have hit the screen lottery?

No you have enabled a virtual resolution. Your actual monitor resolution is still the same.

spelling correction

Hey there Carbies, so I jumped on the bandwagon this morning and got myself a 24" model too.
I was trying to colour calibrate the panel to as close to neutral as possible when I somehow brought up what I imagine is the original diagnostic menu (see picture below):

Searching for said panel yielded an Alibaba listing that I think we can all agree looks pretty darn familiar: Wholesale bigsell 24 inch gaming monitor 144hz 1080p ultrathin FHD From m.alibaba.com

So it looks like checkers just used the listed refresh rate in the ‘product details’ and ignored the 10+ following advertisements claiming it’s 144Hz refresh rate, 99% sRGB coverage etc etc 😅

Pretty sure it must be a VA panel judging at the response time and viewing angles test I did.

I wouldn't say IPS because if I view the monitor from down to up by lower my FOV, the top patch of the monitor because darker, something that my Dell does not do.

But the viewing angles from the sides is basically almost identical to my Dell monitor.

For reference: I am using a Dell U2412M.

I think the 24" might be a VA panel, the 27" is very thin and has no colour shift from left to right or from bottom to top for me.

Wow, that's pretty epic! Doesn't bother me too much since the monitor is head level from my point of view.

I did not see any 27" left when I was at the store, seems that they got sold out pretty quickly.

There was two 24's left when I arrived.

Also wanted to match the size of my current 24" monitor.

Now that you mention it, I only saw three 27" boxes on the shelf at Centurion. Maybe Checkers are only expecting to sell the 24" in bulk and that people won't fork out an extra R1000 for a 27". There were tonnes of 24" monitors left.

I was thinking the same with my meccer 32",
But because i already have a 24" side screen, might aswell get another 24"
I dont think i will be able to go back to full 1080p from this 2560x1440p rez
I have the K3G3R and this screen side by side, I would regret replacing the mecer with 3 of these, the picture quality differences are too far apart not to mention the 1440p vs 1080p aspect.

O , i would never replace my meccer screen, would keep that in the middle, and 1 x 24" on each side

But that would downscale to 1080p for tripple screen gaming in like elite dangerous and sim racing, i would imagine

:DCan anyone please confirm if 4k res is possible on the 27" one? Just want to use it as 2 extra displays.

It's a 1920x1080 display, I guess you could run it at 4k if you want to though, this probably isn't helping come to think of it.

Yes you can supersample up to 4k and then it scales back down 1080p, but then again you can do that with any monitory.

Just wanted to add a friend of mine just managed to still bag this deal at Checkers Fourways - He grabbed 2 27 inches at the sale price. So YMMV with regards to when the special ends

I should actually just put my experience too, I thought.

I bought on yesterday along with a group of friends.

We have all been mightily impressed. While clearly a Chinese panel flip, these things perform to the specs other people have mentioned. A bit of colour tuning goes a long way - my main update is to add additional "Digital Vibrance" in the GeForce control panel. Once you turn on HDR in the panel's OSD, the thing actually runs HDR pretty sweet in games.

Compared to the 27 inch I was planning to get - The AOC c27g1 - for under half the price, this thing is beautiful. Highly recommended to anyone who can grab them at the moment.

Im sure if you show the pamphlet you should get the special price, as long as they have stock.
I might go today/tomorrow and will update if I went.
