Any Cayman drivers here?

I would have jumped 10 meters to do this, seriously.
I have wedding things to sort out. Need to be at the venue by 9am.

Maybe I should postpone my wedding so I can come? xD
My fiance would kill me... lol.
If she loves you she'll understand

But for reals, I'll post here before the next one.

Congrats too! Marriage rocks

Ok let's say you have all the money in the world. Dailying the car means sitting in traffic, visiting the mall etc. Let's be frank a random can bumper bash you in traffic or a mum in her SUV can be on her phone while her trolley full of Woolworths goodies comes rushing towards your shiny Ferrari

Shit happens ...

But

1. The paint jobs on some of these cars are r300k plus ... Yes just the paint finish ... And trust me your local panel beater is not going to charge you r10k to repair that bumper. And worse still it's not like an off the shelf item if you need to replace the bumper ... So a simple bumper bashing will mean you waiting a month or more and at quite a pretty penny

2. Sitting in traffic with a car lile a GT3 rs will guaranteed burn out your clutch. That clutch is like pushing 100kg on an inclined leg press. So unless you willing to have your car in the workshop every month forking out R40k to replace the clutch then by all means

3. Most of these cars run Michelin cup or pirellis ... They don't last very long. Max 5000km - 10000km... And let's forget the cost of this. Means again doing tyre changes very often

4. These cars are low off the ground so grating a front spoiler or splitter is guaranteed. A 2007 GT3 rs will not be able to negotiate a medium size speed bump without grating or cracking that front splitter. R2000 a pop ... And again not really something off the shelf. Need to order and wait

All in all people don't daily because even if you had the money the frustration of your car sitting at a dealership for a service more often than not or doing a tyre change more often than you change underwear doesn't make sense and no one wants to go through that

Snippy snip

You make valid points but then you not going to really be driving the vehicle, which I think defeats the purpose of buying it in the first place? No? Yes? opinion?
If it's taken to a track every so often then that is more of a hobby than enjoying the car everyday.
I get that maintenance can cost a lot but things like the paint, yes if the car gets used the paint will get damaged, I personally wouldn't be super depro if the normal damage would happen.
if a trolly hit any of my vehicles I would be upset.

I'm probably not getting through in the way I would like to.
For e.g My mother bought a R200K motorcycle quite a few years ago. It's got scratches and it's been used. Sure it's not worth half of what she paid for it new but she used it and enjoyed using it. Even with the niggles and issues it gave.

That is my take on getting a vehicle. Similar to what people told me when I bought a Citroen C4 for my Fiance. People told me I wouldn't be able to sell it or I would get nothing for it.
The only reason I would have to sell any of my vehicles is if I'm in serious shit or I want to trade them in for another vehicle which I am then prepared to lose money on it.
But I don't intend to sell or trade the C4 in. My Fiance can use that car until the wheels fall off(lol, which some people say will happen sooner than later xD)

Yea, you made your point but you also used a very racetrack orientated supercar as an example

Yeah I used a track special as an example ... But you will still have the same quirkyness with non track specials ... When I drove my friends maclaren breaking in that car meant that entire rear wing coming up and blocking my entire rear view visibility ... a 458 eats tyres like nothing. It's just when you own a car like one of these you realise it just won't be practical to use it everyday ... I have owned exotics including track specials and this is first hand experience. So even if you wanted to you going to come away frustrated by the experience

On a normal road you never going to experience the full potential of the car. You might as well stick to a normal car. It's like buying a 1080ti and only playing solitaire on it.

And even if you try going all out on some of these cars on public roads you stupid and are endangering others on the road ... Simply because others will not be able to judge the speeds you doing; even though you see yourself as a pro.

So to the point you trying to get across. Nope using many of these exotics as a daily will not be an enjoyable experience. Nothing nice about sitting in traffic and getting back ache because of that single form carbon fibre composite seat.

Then if that's the case ... It's a toy where the most enjoyment will come on a breakfast run or track ... And you'd truly see it's full potential in such a setting

Okay. Fair enough.
I was thinking more along the lines of supercars that are more "comfortable" like the cayman, F12 and maybe an Aston. The hardcore supercars were not really on my mind.

An Aston is More akin to a Bentley ... Which hell yeah will make your daily driving like riding a cloud (although I've personally never experienced a Bentley or rolls Royce ... And the db9 I drove was not my cup of tea)

A Porsche Cayman or 911 (non GT) you can daily ... But people simply hardly do. My wife did for the short time on the 981 Cayman ... She is like you. Asked her if ever I bought an anvetador would she use it everyday? Hell yes she would at my expense [emoji22]Her sentiments were exactly like yours ... To the t. To which I said you crazy :)

So if there are two of us that have that mindset does that make us crazy or does it make the one person that doesn't think like that crazy? ;)

If I were driving a car I would have bought something more in the line for me. But since bikes are better in every way ;) I rather blow R200k on a dream bike, One that can be used for everything anyway. 1299 panigales and HP4s probably sit in those hardcore categories similar to the GT3 and Mclaren but even then if your ass is hard enough you could daily ride those bikes. xD

I don't know a Cayman owner personally but I do know the owner of a Porsche 911 Turbo S who has put about 40,000km on it as a daily as well as done from track days with it.

It has been superbly reliable but of course also very expensive to maintain (especially with the carbon ceramic brakes) although I'm sure the Caymans are much cheaper in that regard.

The problem is that you also can't really take it to a third party because then the resale value plummets as Porsche SA has a very tight hold on the industry. Not a big deal if you plan to keep the car for a long time, but could be a problem if your intention is to resell in 3-5 years.

As sportier (superish) cars go it's a very logical choice in South Africa as opposed to others. (The likes of Bentleys and Aston Martins and Maseratis will kill your pocket in SA. Let's not even mention Ferraris of which I've met a few owners as well. Granted the Cayman isn't quite in that class but it's still of the same brand likeness).

Ironically he owned an Audi RS4 before and granted without knowing actual perfect numbers he reckons the Porsche isn't any more expensive to maintain. However that being said the timing of his buying of the car has seen it appreciating by about 200k so that also might be throwing out his cost of ownership somewhat.

The one thing I've learnt about people who drive these kinds of cars as "daily drivers" is that their concept of daily and driving is vastly different to our.

For one they have multiple cars never just the one.

Two they don't ever actually go anywhere on a "daily" basis and even if they do the distance is such that there virtually is no traffic and even then most cases the car hardly even warms up which is soul destroying to me personally but means there is very little in the way of mileage and tyre wear and such.

Which means when they say you can "daily drive" this car they are thinking of 10-20km a day maximum whereas the rest of us are thinking a 100km round trip.

They generally don't go to malls either. :) Their food and things get delivered at home or even better...sorted out by someone else all together.

Except that the Bentley would actually make it home from the factory...oh the horror stories I could tell you about them Astons.

Maybe it's just my way of living but it doesn't make 100% sense to me that people would buy the vehicle that really like and enjoy and then avoid riding it because they won't be able to sell it for RX amount. If that amount is not worth the time spent driving the vehicle then I don't think you should of bought it in the first place.

Because when the next upgraded model comes, you won't be forking out 60% of the price, but rather just 30% of the price of the new model.....that way, you get to drive and enjoy more exotics.

That's what my friend does anyway, he's owned all the latest of the BMW M models since the E36, since the knock he takes when selling the old model is very minimal, he gets to enjoy the latest model until the next one is launched/ he wants to upgrade.

I absolutely agree with Adam.

Let's take it from an investment point of view which is the view I prefer, if you still need to attend to the rat race, it means you can't truly afford a daily exotic. Rather drive your BMW 330d or whatever and buy a house to rent out or some other investment.

Because if you want to daily an exotic it needs to be during your normal trip to the mall or the whorehouse or whatever, not to work in traffic. Go for a merc amg or something if you really have enough money and need to burn some cash. Exotics are weekenders unless you don't have to work anymore.

Could not have said it better myself, or maybe you will now join me and Adam in the full of kark corner of the room :p

I think we people who haven't had the experience of owning/driving a "supercar" have the idea that you can enjoy it every day as a daily.

Forget about what it costs to maintain some of these machines, if you can't wring it out in track conditions every day, then what's the point of using it as a dd? (unless it's an 86, cos you can still have fun at 40 km/h). Rather just grab an additional Lexus / Range Rover / Merc luxury car for dd and use the fun ones for fun/investments.

* it makes me sad to have to change my view on cars like this - though I doubt I'll ever own one anyways

My view has changed a bit but has also stayed very much the same.

My views were very much "higher end luxury" vehicles. So in car terms I would think Caymens, RS5, BMW140M, M3s,Scubaroos and on the higher price scale the lexus LC500 for example. I wasn't really thinking lambo,Mclaren or high end "hyper cars". In bike terms I would consider the bike that I'm currently trying to get to be at the limit/roof of what I'm willing to ride on the road. Anything more than that is a evil track orientated beasts, I would say cars are somewhat similar.

Still going with the Cayman

You remind me of this guy:
