Amd 3900x vs Intel 9900k

If it's worth anything, I think about spending R6 000 on a CPU and my brain starts to hurt. Maybe it's just because I've had an extremely expensive time with selling my property, which has made me realise the value of a rand.

Also, the process of emigrating has made me realise how expensive shit is here. We earn less yet an AMD 3700X is R1000 more here than in the UK.

R1500 cheaper in the states ..

When two items are so close on paper I start looking at the resale value of the items once I am done with it. And this is where you see that Intel is simply easier to sell after you are done with it.

Having said that, I have an i7 6700 and intend to buy a 3700x purely because the hyper around AMD right now reminds me of my Thunderbird 1200 running on Epox 8KHA+ and Dry ice after pencil unlock hack :) There I just reminded myself of that Super ORB cooler piece of noise hahah.

I cant chirp in too much here as i'm far from knowing the difference on technical aspects of these processors, but as a developer iv'e been using AMD since i bought my first Athlon X2 64, that machine has been working almost every day since i bought and built that machine in 2010+- to today, same everything except went SSD and it still runs very well.

After upgrading to the new setup R5 2600 and enjoying developing and everything else running smoothly (granted i'm not a big gamer) i cant understand why anyone wouldn't go this route. Never had any issues ever with my AMD processors.

Is there really that much real world difference between the top chips performance in gaming; for the few top pro gamer's who "need this" i can understand but is it not really just mental thing?
i mean can you experience the difference of 300-400mhz at the top end differences of core speed? what games are actually utilizing 5Ghz of singe core?

I am on the other hand admit to being a core-whore. I dont need more, i just want more. There is something deeply satisfying about seeing lots of things in Task Manager. It also helps greatly for system responsiveness in intense workloads.

In addition, we should not underestimate the significance of what is happening, we are seeing the beginnings of true SOC. AMD took a long ass time to get here from the bulldozer idea/era and it is really interesting to watch.

Disclaimer:
1. I have a 6950x at 4,2GHz - I do not need an upgrade
2. I have a Xeon/multi cpu/multi-core fetish
3. I really want a 3950x at work, again want vs need. More former than latter.

All of them? There are quite a few workloads that favour clockspeed over cores. But one thing that cannot be replaced is running multiple workloads, i.e. multiple VMs and then starting a game and alt-tabbing between game/vm/browser.

Bro, I just upgraded mt Macbook pro i7 2018 to i9 2019 only because it is marginally faster. Gotta get the best to run badly ported MS apps hahaha

The Xeon chips are also workhorses, have one at home that did 4 years of dev service, on 24/7 and 8 years later it is still going strong.
It is a dual processor socket board, so that will cure your core-fetish.

Guys, whichever way you decide to go be happy with what you buy.
Also who honestly requires more than 8c currently??
32GB RAM yes, but more than 8c?

I am building a new twin Xeon. I just cannot stay away. At least I am not the only one around here and not the worst.

My ego needs more than 8 cores. And 64gb of Dom Plats.

On this build I'm running now I specifically bought 2x16 so that I could upgrade to 64gb in the near future.

I will find a picture, but a guy I know has run his 120c Server dead flat, that is satisfying just looking at that!

What Xeon chips are you going to use?

Found a macthing pair of 5675's to pair with 24GB ram. For shits and giggles.

. It gets difficult to put more than 24gb in on some of these boards.
18 slots. I will find more, now I know where to get some.

Not sure yet where its going, but might go AIO if it will work. Need to play a bit more to see what will work and what wont.

Nice!
AIO on 2011? It is possible, that would be epic, with some OC for the frequency and 2x 2080TI's. 😂

It is 1366 still, next step is to test both sockets and ram and see how i can modify a cheapo tower cooler. Want to pair a 1050 in there unless i can get the power supply situation sorted out.

Edit, motherbard cannot OC, but the chips can go quite high.

LMAO that's cos IOS and OSX is crap don't bring that piece of garbage into this discussion thanks :p

So it's just stupidity that people are prepared to pay over 1000$ for an iPhone and over 3000$ for a Mac?😂😂
The system works, it's at least more secure than Huawei!

haha, its honestly the best mobile computer I have ever had. I travel so much that it makes sense, I can gladly forget my charger at home and work all day on battery. Or better, forgot it in my home country and buy another one at pretty much any airport or mall :)

I had the Lenovo P50 with a charger so large it got confiscated at the airport lol. Never again, that thing never got past 5 hours without.

Well they even willing to spend $999 for a stand!!!

This was posted as joke but it's still honestly a concern. If I hang onto my system for 5+ years who is to say the gap is still just 3 FPS in very demanding games?
Who is to say they're so close once the 1440P GPU bottlneck goes away?

It’s not about results. It’s about feelings and opinions.

The AMD hype train is in full swing and people are getting onboard because Intel no longer has an outright and clear advantage.

Give AMD some BIOS and driver updates and watch them make up that 3 FPS.

I went from having 4x 4930k render setups to 4x 1950X Threadrippers and it has been the best decision I have made. The equivalent Intel setup would give me half the power at double the cost.

For gaming - Choose whatever tickles your fancy.
For Work - I would highly recommend AMD.

I'm considering grabbing some of those 3990WX (Rumered to have 124 Cores) when they eventually get released.

And Windows/Game optimisations to allow related workloads to execute on the same chiplet, preventing that extra round-robin via the infinity fabric.

Exactly. AMD has a very buggy product out that’s still sticking it to Intel yet some updates later, I reckon AMD will be really good.

Meanwhile, Intel keeps refining 14nm and trying to tell people that their “new” products are entirely worthwhile and justify the huge overhead.

And Intel fanboys, don’t tell me they cost the same, AMD provides a cooler with their processors, and we all know how stupid the TDP ratings are on Intels products so you can’t not spend at least R950 to cool a 9700K/9900K.

That last part I'd actually be excited to see.

Gaming benchmark changes was a bit more varied in terms of results, particularly because we saw some larger degradations. The main reason here is that some titles while being multi-threaded, have only a limited number of threads. In these titles and situations where we’re not just purely bound by performance of a single large thread, it’s likely that we’re seeing the CPU clock slightly lower in the new release BIOS compared to what we tested originally. Our results were also consistent across multiple runs in this regard, so this isn't an artifact of normal run-to-run variation.
A little bit of an overclock to get the ghz back up and a WIndows patch or two and you'll see 5% gains across the board I reckon

100% completely agree. AMD 3700X on a B550 board could be a well priced wet dream. Save up for decent RAM though!
3800X with 3600Mhz RAM (what I'd rather aim for) will destroy the well-priced part a little though haha.
