Alternative OS to android for tablet?

I have a samsung p585 and I want to know if there is an alternative to android that I can install that wont take up 15 of the available 16gb storage, seriously I can barely have any apps installed on this thing. I have a 64gb sd but every now and then the tablet doesn't read it, I read that this is a common problem.
I dont know anything about custom roms and what not, but I'm quite willing to install a different os onto the tablet that is lighter than android 8, I would still need to access the android app store. Tablet is full of kids games and plex.

What are my options???

Look at lineage OS. That might be smaller. It's a pity that Ubuntu touch never took, that would have been awesome.
