Advise to buy an 1.8T engine

Seems my mind is set towards 1.8T, now of the 36 engine codes (I think) which fits an MK1 the best? And what else to consider before buying, for example, AGU vs AUQ vs AUM? The AUQ makes more power, but seems to be the same engine as the AUM, the AGU seems to be older, but the AUQ and the AGU seems to be the same price?

AUQ comes with the bigger K03s turbo, drive by wire throttle, bigger injectors but smaller ports and weaker rods. This is off the top of my head so I might be wrong

Found this:

98 - 00 - agu - k03 turbo - cable throttle - large port head - non vvt - 20mm wrist pins - map to 200bhp internals capable of upto 350 with good smooth map

00 - 03 - aum - k03s turbo - dbw - small port head - vvt - 19mm wrist pins - map to 230 ish - internals capable of 300bhp

03 on - auq - exactly the same as aum but with light (30bhp) factory map and six speed box.

What's the best 1.8 20vt engine

This thread's got my interest since I also own a 1.8 20vT car and I really like these engines. I think for the sake of simplicity the AGU is the best way to go if you are swapping it into a MK1 chassis, it's got less unnecessary stuff when it comes to electronics, sensors and the emissions system. It's usually also the cheapest and you have the option of just bolting on the K04 turbo and manifold, with the S3/TT225 size injectors and MAF, good intercooler and run a 76mm pipe from the turbine outlet all the way to the back, that should get you to about 170-180kW when mapped properly. 180kW in a 900kg MK1 chassis will upset some very expensive cars

I am seriously attracting the rite people now.
Thanks @QuantumX
I also had a change to do some reading on the matter in the meanwhile?
And its an hard choice, either start with the AGU cause it has potential to go up to 350hp, which I dont think I will ever go to, or take the AUQ which has VVT and allready has the bigger turbo and just get it to 230hp?
Can the AGU be upgraded to VVT and does it make an improvement?
Can the ports on the AUQ be "opened" to also be big like AGU, and how much improvement?
Although the AUQ is a bigger head ache to get running does it not provide more tuning options if using an aftermarket ecu?
Now I really need loads of opinions especially from the guys who has done this or who own the above mentioned engines.

Forgot to add, is R11 000 for an AGU a good price? Its from the importers and not a private sale

From the site I posted above:

"vvt is not a performance increase like honda's VTEC etc, it's used for creating valve overlap on idle to draw fumes back into the cylinder for emissions purposes"

I think with the 110kW of the standard AGU and a chassis that weighs only ~900kg you will already have tons of performance, and it would be reliable AF. My car weighs 1650kg and makes about 150kW and it's already plenty fast. The same power to weight ratio in a 900kg caddy will only need 82kW, so with 110kW it would be like my 1650kg car having 200kW

Dont get a vvt. If you want more power just fit a GTX28 and you have 300hp.
Remember you wont get 110Kw with the AGU in your project car, it will be automatically more due to upgraded exhaust and intake and management.
You are likely looking at 130kw

GTX28? I am more familiar with a GTX 1060 etc. Lol
I am also glad that you mentioned the management, I have read something about the bosch mototronic M3.8.3 and ME7.5 these seem to be the oem ecu for the egines, please can someone explain more. Is it better to stick to a bosch system or is dictator or soemthing else better?

I am a Spitronics dealer. I would suggest a Orion system for that engine.
The OEM management is made to cater for various fuels. You don't need it.
Remove the drive by wire. Conversion I did from wire to mechanical. Also note the neat custom coil bank :p

If not mistaken the AGU is not DBW, so thats sorted. Correct me if I am wrong, do I need other coils if I use the spitronics system, or did you do it for other reasons (accept for looking cool).
O ja, it seems I am going AGU as the importer is now at R10 000.

Yes you can use the Audi coils :) They have an internal igniter.
I used 4 coils to make it a full sequential system.

[emoji43] Uh uh nee, jy moet noi verduidelik asof jy n kind leer, ek het iets hier nie verstaan nie?

Okay, I would still like more options on this, but this far spitronics is winning the race.
Which management system do you recommend, why, and cost.

Next question (although so many are still pending lol)
Who be the best tuner in the Vaal Triangle?
Road mapping or dyno mapping?

So its gonna be AGU (1.8T 20V) with a dicktator system.
Most of the tuners close to me prefer dicktator as they say it works good on a dyno, only one guy local said spitronics because he maps on the road and then spitronics is easier.
Also got a dicktator second hand for very cheap.

Who will be able to help me get the correct clutch kit? I have done that "google" thing but with little success, have done about 4hours of reading for almost nothing.
According to Valeo the AGU engine uses a 228mm clutch kit, whereas my HM engine uses a 210mm, I am going to keep my FFZ gearbox for now so do I keep the 210mm clutch or do I need to buy a 228mm one?
