Hi Carbonite Folk,

Hoping for some knowledgeable input for those who know, I don't know a whole lot about computers, i do however know the basics. I am looking to upgrade my i5 and give it to my younger brother (he has a gen 1 i3 and STRUGGLES with most games as his CPU is a serious bottleneck). I was going to buy a i7 and give him only the i5 but it wont fit on his board (to my knowledge) so i am looking at buying a CPU and Mobo combo so i can give him my old CPU and Mobo.

I have had Intel since i started gaming on a Pentium 3 a very long time ago, i like Intel and don't mind staying with it. However i am open to AMD but i know exactly zero about their CPUs. I am looking to buy second hand combo and have a budget of about 1.5-2k max. I am doing this upgrade more for my brother to benefit than i actually need it. My rig runs all the games i play with good FPS on max at 1080p and i have no real need to upgrade - Arma 3 does sometimes strain my CPU in certain environments but nothing serious that is a problem.

The big question - What AMD combo (second hand) is in my price range and will be an upgrade to my i5 or equivalent to a good i7? and also any advice on what i7 combo to look for?

My rig:

i5 3470
Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3H
ASUS 1060 6gb
32gig (4x8g) DDR3 1600
1TB SSD
Coolmaster 700w

Games i play regularly:

FiveM (GTA 5)
Arma 3
Scum
Insurgency Sandstorm

I am not a heavy gamer (everything i play is online, i only play these days as i stay in the bush far away from everything and its lekker to connect with mates online while jamming a few hours here and there).

Thanks in advance peeps!

To be honest for 1.5 to 2k you will not get any combo bud.... So rather upgrade the i5 to an i7 3770 and be done with it bud. If you pair that 1060 6g with an i7 3770 it will definitly improve your gaming experience.

Agreed. Get a 3770/3770k and a CoolerMaster 212 cooler to keep it nice and cool.

So i have been keeping an eye out for a deal, i have just missed two as i didn't have cash on hand - I7 3770k with MSI board for 1.6k - this would have been perfect. I totally understand my budget is a bit low - the whole rig is made up from collected and hand me downs, i am content with my setup - just looking to see if i can find something in a good price range that will allow me to give my brother my old parts.

What budget should i be looking at for something to pair with my current rig?

If you remove the 3470 and put a 3770k you will be fine. Then to build another desktop minus gpu around the 3470 you will need around 1k to 1.5k a simple board 8gb ram and a cheap psu.500gb hdd

I would go I5 8500 + MOBO then at least you would have some warranty on your items.
- 8500 R2k saw one not to long ago.
- Mobo around R1000-R1500

- You would have to upgrade your RAM unfortunately but luckily for you RAM prices have dropped lately.
16gb DDr4 2400 - R1000

If its to much then rather do the 3770k

This is an option - only problem is my sh!t mobo wont be able to OC. So will it make a difference between a 3770 and 3770k if i cant overclock?

I was thinking to buy just the CPU for myself and buy my brother a Mobo and give him my i5.

the locked 3770 will not bottleneck a 1060 unless in cpu intensive games but it will be little to none existant. you could get the 3770 it will be alright

Unfortunately this is too much, i am more than content with my setup - my other hobbies take all my money! Warranty is not a big problem for me (i understand that i am buying second hand so if something breaks its the risk i take)

great idea but OP's budget does not afford him the luxury to get those parts

maybe this is the way forward.

what would be a basic mobo to pair with the 3470 for my brother? and what price do they normally go for if you know?

300 - 400 lol they are dirt cheap. You can get those h mobos or something. The built part is the 3470 is locked and does not consume tons of power.

Im not sure sticking to the standard 3770 non k is a good idea as an upgrade though. There is very little difference between your 3470 vs 3770.

I would say go with the 3770k even if you are not going to overclock it. The 3770k has a slightly higher boost clock and if you do OC it in the future you can get so much more from it. If you cool it well its an OC beast

Makes sense, if the 3770k is better than non k I will most likely buy the 3770k, and I will probably buy a mobo later that I can OC.

Sorry I lie, the 3770 and 3770k are basically identical. Their base speeds are slightly different but their turbo speed is the same and obviously the 3770k gives you the OC potential

3470 - 4 Cores, 4 Threads @3.2 - 3.6GHz,
3770 - 4 Cores, 8 Threads @3.4 - 3.9GHz
3770k - 4 Cores, 8 Threads @3.5 - 3.9GHz

Thanks bud! i think the answers on this thread have answered a few of my questions. I will buy a 3770k and a cheap mobo for the i5 to give to my brother. I will replace my mobo at a later stage so i can OC. Thanks guys, i'll update what i end up doing. I will also send my brothers rig specs when he sends it to me tonight. It will be good to have him running stable FPS when we are PVP - he is a much better gamer than me but he is limited because of his PC.

You don't need a 3770k. 3770 is enough. For 3470 to work, get a 1155 motherboard, but make sure it supports 3rd gen CPUs ( 3470 is 3rd gen).

Here are some 3rd gen mobos for sale
